Can anyone shed some light on what's happening to the United Church archives at Victoria College? Apparently Victoria College has reneged on their agreement to share the cost of running the archive. I wonder if that is because the university only sees things in corporate terms these days, which would be worth protesting, But perhaps there are other issues about the value of the materials in the archive, how well used it is, etc.
More information about the issue is here:

The Archives at Victoria initially agreed to share the costs of the archive half and half. However, that cost has increasingly over the years been more heavily borne by Victoria and at least three of the Conferences in Southern Ontario decided they could do it for less money if they did their own archiving "in house." As a result, the two remaining Conferences, Hamilton being one of them, were unable to bear the added cost of the archives. Thus, new solutions are going to have to be found.
As for protesting, seek out the actual information from the Archives in Toronto and you'll get their much handed-out sheet on their dilemma. The Archives and Victoria have actually been very active in tyring to make it all work. I believe it is the Conferences who feel they can do it for less who have made the change necessary.

Sort of, Gordie. Part of the original deal also included substantial financial assistance from the National Office. That funding was cut, which started the chain of dominoes falling, as you describe. Whether that cut was wise or not is a discussion I am open to having, but that was the first of the chain of final blows. (if I remember that correctly)
