So, one week until we have a new government (or at least a new mandate for the old one). Time to start an election pool. No money required (but we could play pretend, I suppose), just make a prediction on who will form the government, who will form the opposition and, if you're really brave, try forecasting seats. I'll post mine later. Need to check the current proportions and latest polls so I have something to base my seat forecast on.
Who would have thought it possible that right in Canada democracy could be assaulted so suddenly and so brazenly? We;re used to seeing this sort of thing in the developing world. Yet here we are: Stephen Harper lieing to the public, creating hysteria with rhetoric, and threatening to pervert democratic process, all for what? in order to hang on to his already tenuous minority government, elected by a mere 37.6% of Canadians.
This thread is to talk about what we see in the news on election day.
I was in shock at two-hour lineups to vote. Wow. What is up with that? I walked in, and there was one person in front of me. I was in & out in about 10min, even with my frustration re passport not accepted
i was also surprised at the size of the package that they had to take into the booth. (Obama had a file folder which included referendum information, etc.) Is that normal?
I've seen an article or two about how the new identification rules for voting affected rural Canadians and students. Two thirds of the Dalhousie student population that came out to vote were turned away from the polls because they didn't have the proper proof of residence.
Did any of you have problems voting? Was everyone aware of what they needed to have with them, or do you think Elections Canada could have used their $9 million+ better?
