First United Church, in the heart of Uptown Waterloo, has as its greatest asset our people. We are people of different ages and at different stages on our spiritual path, choosing to support each other along that path -- people open to experiencing God through Jesus Christ. When you visit us on Sunday morning at First United, it is our hope that you feel welcomed and comfortable from the time you enter our church building. Our weekly Sunday morning service, at 10:30 a.m., is a traditional style of worship with music provided by a 40 voice choir, the congregation and accompanied by our pipe organ and piano. Though our service is traditional, the message is fresh and speaks to us about a loving, open and inclusive God and helps us understand how God is relevant in our lives. On Sunday morning we also have a Sunday school program for children, with good resources and support for our teachers and a nursery program for children who are younger than school age. For adults we have a weekly adult study and discussion group which meets before the church service each Sunday. There are groups, for both youth and adults, which gather regularly during the week. We have a strong tradition of outreach, expressed both in generous giving and in discussion of issues. We have sponsored a refugee family, Habitat for Humanity builds, and other justice/outreach issues. This includes ongoing support and space for an "Out of the Cold" program that is open each Friday night from November to April, for those in our community who need a hot meal and a place to sleep. As our mission statement says, "Through God's love we are called to be Christ's disciples". That call is ongoing and we are "becoming" the people of Christ in this place. We invite you to join us.

Quick Facts

I have school age children. Is there a place for them on Sunday morning ?

Absolutely! School age children are part of worship at the beginning of the service and then they head out to fun and engaging classes based on grade.

What about children who are too young for school?

We have both an infant and toddler nursery staffed by volunteers, who will make sure your little ones are well taken care of.

What music is played during services?

Usually organ or piano. Sometimes our bell choir takes part in the service too. Occasionally we may have special music from trumpet to guitar.

How do people dress for service?

Some a little dressy, most casual.

What happens after the service?

Coffee, tea and juice in Hilliard Hall (our Gym). Some days there are even cookies or cakes! It's a great opportunity to have a chat with others

Who do I contact with questions?

You can contact Janet in the church office at (519) 745 8487 or office@firstunitedchurch.ca. If she can't find an answer for you she will get you to someone who can.
