Low United Church, member congregation of the Aylwin Pastoral Charge along with Trinity United in Kazabazua, is a small but feisty English-speaking congregation that believes in witnessing to its faith in the Christ by engaging in creative worship (on Sunday mornings, a Summer outdoor worship and potluck, a Blessing of the Animals and Animal Memorial Service, a Christmas Prayer and Healing service); study opportunities (monthly Bible study; Lenten educational series); and creating community (through our seasonal -- and delicious!-- lunches, and popular Book, Bake and Yard sale). Our members are a diverse group of people, mostly age 50 and above at present, who come from a variety of denominational backgrounds and careers. We are an open, inviting lot who value the presence and gifts of each one who walks through our doors. Why not come check us out?!

About the Neighbourhood

The village of Low, Quebec and surrounding area is part of the beautiful Gatineau River valley that stretches north of Ottawa towards the city of Maniwaki and the vast open spaces of the Canadian north. Low is a 45 minute drive from downtown Ottawa, a village of approximately 800 full-time residents. Nearby lakes and "cottage country" swell the population in the summer to several thousands. As an officially bilingual town, Low boasts a well-supported English-speaking high school ("St. Mike's"), an ice arena, a "CLSC" clinic, library and several small grocery stores and restaurants. The natural beauty of the river, forests and farms makes Low and area a natural spot to encounter God in the midst of nature's best! The tight-knit community of French and English speaking, of Roman Catholic and Protestant, ensures a great quality of life!

Quick Facts

Who do I contact with questions?

Contact Rev. Read Sherman. Use the contact info above to reach him.

Is the Mapquest map accurate?

No! 85 Martindale Road is just metres SOUTH of Brooks Rd, not north as on the map. From the 105, turn rt. on Brooks, then rt. on Martindale.

What music is played during services?

We use the United Church's up-to-date "Voices United" and "More Voices" hymnals, with organ accompaniment. We'd love to add guitar or fiddle or ?? to the mix - might you have musical gifts to offer?

What''s heavenly about your church?

The people. The pies, cakes and other baking! The sense of God's presence in a small, inviting space.

How do people dress for service?

Country casual.

What happens after the service?

Coffee, tea, juice and cookies in the vestibule after 9:15am services, for those who want to stick around and chat. Most do! After 11am services, a few of us generally go out for lunch. :-)

Low United Church

Church Minister

Rev. Read Sherman

Read has been minister at Low United Church since July, 2003. It is his "settlement" charge - meaning his first posting as an ordained United Church of Canada minister. He loves the family feel of this congregation and the intelligence, and caring ways, of its members and friends. Read is originally from the States, educated at Yale (BA, Religious Studies), and Harvard (M.Div), and now a proud Canadian citizen. He has a manse in Kazabazua (15 minutes north of Low), and otherwise resides in Ottawa with his partner, Stephane Lemelin, and their two adorable pugs, Puccini and Bella.
