Nelson United roots extend back to the first settlers in Nelson Township. The church and the adjoining cemetery are located in Nelson Village (formerly Hannahsville) which is now part of the City of Burlington. In 1830 a frame church with a gallery was built which served until the present stone church was built in 1859. In 1959, the Sunday School addition was built to accommodate the expanding congregation

At one time the membership of Nelson United was composed entirely of the local farming community. Times have changed those farms have been replaced by urban housing. Today the membership is composed of people from all walks of life and the church is located in an urban area. But we still retain the small community church atmosphere. If you are looking for a church that is informal, friendly and small compared to the large urban churches, then Nelson United may be just the Church you are looking for.
On October 25th, 2004, Barbara accepted a Presbytery appointment to Lowville and Nelson churches to help us through a transition period as both churches discerned whether God was calling us to unite into a 2-point charge. We warmly welcomed Barbara and her husband, Dale Dutton, into our joint family of faith, grateful for the gifts she offered. Since that time, Barbara has led our congregations in growth by helping to provide a warm welcoming place, where people can come for spiritual nurturing, and in Barbara's words" by sharing the love and joy we are so freely given through God's generous sharing with us." We have now completed our transition period and, on May 7th, 2006, the congregations of both Lowville and Nelson United Churches voted unanimously to unite our ministries into the 2-point charge of Lowville-Nelson United Ministries of The United Church of Canada. On September 4th, 2007, Barbara’s call to our churches became permanent.
