Open Minds.  Open Hearts.  Open Doors.

We are a small congregation located on the West Shore -- just outside of Victoria on beautiful Vancouver Island.  We are inclusive and welcoming : of children and youth, of the GLBT community, of those who are new to the Christian path.  For us, the gospel is Good News -- God is at work in the world, and we are invited to follow in the way of Jesus by serving, healing, forgiving, and rejoicing.

We are blessed with people willing to share their gifts in the areas of Christian education & faith formation, worship & welcome, pastoral care, healing pathway, prayer, music and administration.  We encourage people to serve out of their gifts and passions.  Come and join us!

About the Service

Our community time starts at 10:30 am on Sunday mornings.   After announcements, we worship together for approximately 15 minutes and then the children (and often the youth) head to different areas of the church to continue their worship and learning.  Our services are opportunities to experience the presence of God in Christ: through great music (led by Jeff, a UVic music student), a deepening knowledge of the scriptures, preaching, and sharing our lives with God and one another in prayer.  Joy abounds.

About the Neighbourhood

Pilgrim United Church is located near the corner of Metchosin Road and Painter Road in the suburb of Colwood near Victoria, BC.  We are close to the beach (where we hold outdoor services at Easter and in the summer), forests with walking trails (join our Earth Day walk!), and we share our property with a day care centre and a community garden.

Quick Facts

What's heavenly about your church?

The joyful Spirit of God is truly felt in this place, and among these gifted, lovely people!

How do people dress for service?

We, and our worship, are informal. So be comfortable. Some folks wear jeans, and others dress up -- be yourself!

What music is played during services?

Our fabulous musician, Jeff, plays the piano as well as the guitar and soprano sax. Other musicians in the congregation occasionally join in with guitars and other instruments.

What happens after the service?

We head downstairs to enjoy refreshments and each other's company. It's a great time for conversation.

What if I'm not sure about this whole Christian thing?

You're not alone. Many folks are exploring whether the Christian path is right for them. Come and discover with us -- you are welcome in any stage of your journey.

What if I have mobility challenges?

Our building is not ideal (a split level with many stairs), but we do have outside ramps going up to the sanctuary (and washrooms) and down to the hall. We have accessible washrooms and flexible seating in the sanctuary (chairs not pews).

What about dietary challenges?

We do have some folks with severe nut allergies and gluten intolerances, and we try to ensure there is always something safe to eat. Our refreshment time is GFCF on the 3rd and 4th Sundays of the month.

Who do I contact with questions?

Pilgrim United Church

Church Minister

Erin Sterling

Erin Sterling and Edward Cawley arrived at Pilgrim in July of 2007 after working for seven years with a pair of rural churches in southwestern Manitoba.  Three years later, Ed is acting in a volunteer capacity, spending time with the preschoolers and their parents.  Erin is the solo paid minister now, currently working 3/4 time (30 hours per week).  They are joined at Pilgrim by their three fabulous kids: Aidan, Ciaran, and Vivian.  Erin's vision for Pilgrim is that it continue to thrive as a welcoming place for folks to discover what it means to follow in the way of Jesus Christ.  Walking in Christ's way isn't always easy, but it is a Way of life that brings meaning, purpose, and joy.
