 Tottenham United Church

Part of the Tottenham/ Rich Hill United Church Pastoral Charge Tottenham UC Services are at 11:05 a.m., followed by juice/cookies and fellowship.  We welcome all people, regardless of religious affiliation or cultural background or sexual orientation.   Everyone is welcome.  Come in, come in and sit down, you are a part of our family.

We have volunteers who will pick up people who do not drive to attend church and the building is wheelchair accessible.

Our summer worship is held in July at Tottenham UC and August at Rich Hill UC.

In our worship we sing a blend of traditional and contemporary hymns, and our music ministry is really important to us. Our choir meets every Thursday evening at 7 pm until the end of May. Choir practice resumes again the 1st week of September.  We sing anthems at most Sunday church services which begin at 11:05 a.m.  We have socials in June and December at choir members homes.  We have a Choir Choral Service in December.  If you enjoy singing we welcome you.

We offer Sunday School for kids ages 3 to 13 and we have a  nursery service.  At the Tottenham United Church Nursery all babies are welcome in the Nursery during church service. Please let the Sunday school teachers know if you require assistance.   We also have a comfortable rocking chair in the tower office at the front of the church for moms and dads to comfort and feed babies.

In July we have "Fun week" VBS at Rich Hill UC for the joint pastoral charge and the surrounding community.   This is organized by Janet Hastings.    For info call the church office, 905-936-3091.

Please join us for Soup and Bun to benefit Community Living which is an important ministry of Tottenham/Rich Hill pastoral charge.  Soup and a Bun is a social time every Monday  at 12 noon hosted by our joint congregations of Tottenham & Rich Hill at Tottenham United Church begining in September and goes until  mid May. The church is open for the social on Mondays from Noon-1:30 p.m. Cost is $2.00 per person, children free. Come for lunch and enjoy the social time. If you are available to help in any way, please contact John Milne at the church.

Any group or member wishing to use the church facilities, please book through John Milne. Advance notice is appreciated. Please contact John through the church office.

The Tottenham United Church Women are a very active group of women.   We have 15 members and our regular meetings are held every two months. We have fundraisers in April which is our Toot and Holler Bake Sale and in November we have our Snowflake Craft & Bake Sale.   We are well known for our frozen meat and fruit pies which we sell on a regular basis. We have a social in June and December  for all women of the church. Contact any UCW member for info on catering or joining our very welcoming group.

New Addition:  In 1996 the new extension was built with a lot of dedication and financial contributions from the congregation.   We have a new minister’s office (with the old minister’s office becoming the secretary’s office and photocopy centre). There is an All Purpose Room next to the Minister’s Office for the Choir, Sunday School, and meeting use. Downstairs we have a new elevator, three new washrooms (with one wheelchair friendly), two more Sunday school rooms and a new electric entrance doorway.

New Kitchen:  The kitchen was remodeled once again in 2007 with a state of the art dishwasher, all new cupboards, walls, ceilings, floors and doors.  We had new dishes donated by the UCW who received a bequest from Edna Cairns, a former UCW member.  We also had a new upright freezer donated by two UCW members and it is used continuously by the UCW for their popular frozen meat and fruit pies.

Church Basement :  Our basement was used for several years by the Junior Garden of Learning Day Care five days a week. They left in 2007. The church hall is now used on a regular basis by the Brownies, Girl Guides, an Astronomical group, Weight Watchers, and a Dance group.  We also use the church hall for funeral lunches, birthday party lunches, and annual beef and turkey dinners.  To rent out the hall, contact our church office and they will put you in touch with John Milne, the coordinator.

In June 1895 Tottenham was partially destroyed by fire and with it the orginial Methodist church that was on the site. All that was saved was the 1857 pulpit Bible and the tower bell which still calls us to worship. The cornerstone for the new church was laid Sept. 9, 1895 (our Anniversary). Mr. Totten donated to the church the trowel he received and it is still in our church archive desk.  In August 1900 Tottenham and Rich Hill became a 2-point charge.

Pipe Organ: We had a Pipe organ for many years and after several decades of much use, the organ was in a state of disrepair. It was replaced in 1990 with a new electric organ. The pipes from the Carnegie organ still remain in the choir alcove.

Remodelling: In 1950 the front of the church was remodeled to enclose one set of stairs entering into the west foyer. The bell tower entrance was modified to provide an office for the minister. After this the kitchen was completely remodeled with new cupboards and flooring and new carpeting throughout the church.
