Nov. 28th: White Gift Service: The Sunday School will lead the service. Bring mittens and hats to decorate our tree and donate to the Women's shelter.
The church was begun by some early Bible Christians in the 1830's. They later joioned in the union of Methodist churches in 1887. Finally in 1925, they united to become the United Church of Canada in Welcome. The church community serves a mainly rural area but is on the fringe of Port Hope so a few new residents in the newer parts of Port Hope are coming out to join us in worship. Our congregation is a fairly well-balanced age wise, and we have a very active Sunday School. They lead in worship at least twice through the year. They are blessed with a very talented choir that enjoys the challenge of contemporary music. There is also a group of musicians (The Buskers) that play the golden oldies at the various nursing homes as well as some wider community events.
We worship Sundays at 10:15. During July and August we worship at various homes of members a la fresco. The schedule with locations will be posted soon.
The neighbourhood grew up at an intersection on the old Highway 2. It had a sign that read Welcome to Port Hope. Originally it took the unofficial name of Guidepost after the sign at the intersection pointing the direction. Over time part of the sign fell into disrepair, so the story goes, leaving only the Welcome portion, hence the present name. The church surely attempts to live up to that billing and they do do a pretty good job of that.
