I have a copy. Some of it is a bit lame and some is funny... and some isn't on at all. That's because this is a big church and one size doesn't fit all.

This book sounds like fight club. You not supposed to discuss it's contents?

The Unofficial United Church

The Unofficial United Church Handbook is a comprehensive and humorous approach to learning everything you need to know about the United Church. Read about sacraments, Bible heroes and villains, how to handle a last-minute potluck dinner, how to listen to a sermon, how to pray, and much more!

The link on that page is 404, however.

Does it include the last seven words of the Church 'We Never Did It That Way Before"?
(That applies to any religious organization, actually)

I was kind of disappointed in it, probably because I had first read the Unofficial Handbook of Christianity, which is essentially the same book, save for a few small edits.
For once, DKS and I agree. It's OK, but not great.

I've glanced through it at book displays at various church events I've attended. It might be a good book for someone new to the UCC, or just getting involved. It's rather simplistic, but it does lead you through some situations. Hard to believe that there are people who have never been to a church potluck - but here's your guide. The same as taking communion. It explains how and why it is done - at a beginner level. Also tells you the who's who - clergy, minister, clerk of session, chair of the board, youth leader - gives you a bit of an idea why those people might be up front taking part in things at certain times - offers a bit of guidance if you are asked to participate.
But if you really want to know, or to be involved at a different level - read the Manual. The Unofficial Handbook is easy to read, and sometimes amusing. The Manual - well ??? Don't try reading teh manual at bedtime - you won't get far.

I own the unofficial manual

I own the unofficial manual and found it hilarious as well as a good introduction for new people. I have to agree though that it definiley is not the meat of the church but it is a great appetizer.

I have given the Unofficial United Church Handbook to Confirmands instead of Bibles. I can see how it might not be meaty enough for adults who are seeking something in depth. It is instead light hearted, a little self-depricating at times, and yet there are sections that are thought provoking (i.e. section on how to talk to someone who doesn't agree). It is simple to access, and you can use it as a reference guide instead of having to read it cover to cover. I also found that confirmands tended to either want to select their own Bible - or their families wanted to buy them a Bible, so they would often end up with two and the one we bought them would not be used. As luck would have it, there is a chart on how to shop for you own Bible in the Handbook - so I know the Guide gets used :-)

It sounds like it is an interesting book. I attended a UC for several years and never heard about it. I didn't hear about an Official Handbook either.

kay,
other than The Manual (which is not a handbook, or handy, or easily understood) there is no Official UCC Handbook. So that may be why you haven't heard of one

I agree that it's a useful and user-friendly to those who are new or re-acquainting themselves to the UCC. The light-hearted tone is quite appropriate for a beginner's look at us, given that it can be hard to try and define us.
