Anybody know where I can send my obviously very useless United For Peace pin. Wasn't that a bloody waste of money!

This thread disappoints me. I thought the topic was Israeli Pilates. I thought I was going to learn some new exercise moves.

Scot captures storming of ship attacked by Israeli commandos on film
Published Date: 01 June 2010
Mr Ghani spoke of his horror as events unfolded, saying: "We have had several injuries, at least one of them critical.
"We are being hit by tear gas, stun grenades, we have a navy ship on either side and helicopters overhead.
"We are being attacked from every single side and this is in international waters, not in Israeli waters."
Mr Ghani recorded footage of Israeli commandos abseiling from military helicopters as civilian passengers on board the Mavi Marmara fled for cover. The film, broadcast on the Viva Palestina website, also showed bloodstained stretchers and scenes of chaos as doctors struggled to treat injured passengers.
There was no footage of Israeli forces coming under attack and Mr Ghani told how a white flag had been raised as the Israeli operation began.
At one point, dozens of aid workers are shown cowering in a room within the ship as shooting goes on outside. One aid worker is also shown screaming in pain after apparently being shot by an Israeli commando.
Mr Ghani – awarded Young Scottish Muslim of the Year by First Minister Alex Salmond in 2008 – was understood to be under arrest by Israeli authorities last night.
His father, Haq Ghani, said he feared for his son's safety adding: "The only information I have been able to glean is that there are no British people who were killed. We believe nine Turkish people were killed.
"I don't only feel for my son, I feel for all those people who have been hurt and killed. These were people who volunteered their time and their money to help others.
"I am proud that my son is doing a job that allows him to shed light on the position of oppressed people of the world, like the people of Gaza."

Israeli ruthlessness is
Posted on: 06/01/2010 19:08
Israeli ruthlessness is understandable. It was bred in the holocaust and in the failure of most countries, including Canada and the US, to help.
We can understand it. But we can't afford it. The consequences of this attack can be very serious, indeed. Israel won't suffer them, not with such a large nuclear arsenal and a ruthless willingness to use it. But the rest of the world will feel consequences.
Meanwhile, we have to face why Israel has kept the Palesinians penned up in a concentration camp for 60 years, and has blocked all aid, even basic food supplies and medecines, and even when delivered by the UN with Israeli inspection.
The answer is obvious. Israel wants that land.

Generic: So you think piracy's okay? The Somali pirates need to be assessed according to the same standards. To attack ANY ship in international waters is piracy or an act of war.
Happy sailing.

Well said.
I have great sympathy for the Palestinians, but I guess if I were an Israeli I would probably support my country's actions. My sympathy for the Palestinians does not entirely rule out some understanding if not approval for Israeli foreign policies. ( I strongly object to my own country's unquestioning support for almost anything Israel does, though,)
I think the West 's actions and inactions in the '30s and '40s are the root of tne conflict in the Middle East. The Palestinians and Arabs in general have had to bear the worst of the consequences of European anti-Semitism (in the anti-Jewish sense rather in the broader sense of anti Semitic peoples). And I do not mean to say that Western anti-Semitism was contained all within the borders of Europe. British failure as the mandate power in Palestine in the aftermath of WWII to deal with immigration didn't help. Nor did the lack of welcome of Jewish refugees by western countries that couild have absorbed huge numbers of refugess far more easily than Palestine could, including the United States.

Posted on: 06/02/2010 12:33
I agree with much of the above -with one exception.
Nobody has a right to board a ship in international waters unless, as in the Somalia case, with UN permission. And it should also be noted that for years Israel has been blocking food and medical aid to Palestine, even from the UN, and even when it passes first through Israeli inspection.
In practical terms, this commando attack does nothing to make Israel safer, or to bring us any closer to a solution. Quite the contrary, it makes the whole world measurably less stable. And the country most likely to suffer from such instability is Israel itself.
Those who accept Israel's behaviour toward its neighbours are assisting in a suicide.

Another boat is now headed to Palestine with supplies. It will arrive tomorrow, it the Israelis let it.
Will the Israelis let it pass, after apologising for what has happened?

I should be very surprised if they allow it to pass. My guess is they'll send ships large enough to force it into an israeli port At the least, they will block its way until fuel runs low and it has to withdraw.

Posted on: 06/06/2010 03:27
Look. This was a terrible mistake caused by high emotions on all sides. Israel never ment to go in and shoot people and I assume equally the protesters never intended to by shot either. In the case of Israel they badly mishandled this situation and are paying the price in opion polls. Their refusual to go along with the idea of a nuclear free middle east won't win them many more friends either. As for the people on the boats they knew they would be stopped and wanted to confront israel over the blockade of Gaza. Life was lost and some people scored political points and others lost them. I am getting tired of keeping score at this point no matter who is ahead in points now days.

Do I stand with bedsheets in hand? No! I stand with whatever weapon I have at hand. If gun, then don't be surprised. I am after all protesting!
What gets me is we are dealing with the "God's chosen ones" So far all chosen one means to me is "above the law".
So "where can I send my United For Peace Pin" becuase it is a total sham.

I have been suspicious of "peace activists" for years. Now my suspicions have been confirmed. I find it utterly crazy the way your church supports an organization that regularly attacks its neighbour via rockets and desires its ultimate destruction.
Peace? Don't make me laugh.

Generic guy, begin your education. Google Haganah or Stern Gang. Then take a look at exactly how Israel got the land it stands on. Then take a look at who pays to make its military the most powerful in the region.
But you're right. Peace? Don't make me laugh, either.
By the way, do you support the US that frequently assassinates elected leaders, sponsors revolutions against elected government, murder 200,000 Maya natives in Guatemala, killed over a million civilians in Iraq, and now fires drones (better than rockets) which are killing civilians in Pakistan?
Or is your cynicism all one way?
By the way, over the last sixty years, how many Israelis have been killed by Palestinians? How many Palestinians have been killed by Israelis?

These demonstrators provoked
Posted on: 08/05/2010 12:18
These demonstrators provoked this issue, not Israel. It was their desire to cause this action, they were the ones who attacked the boarding party. I personally don't condone violence, but in this case the protestors brought in on themselves.
