Good news

I got some good news today.  My  mother's condition has been deteriorating very rapidly over the past 2 weeks and we thought for sure it was because the tumor was growing, but we got the results from her MRI and the tumor has actually shrunk.  The deterioration has been caused by the water retention that is a side effect of the steriods that she is on.  They cut the steriods by one pill a day for this week and will be reducing them by half a pill a week until they find a balance between the side effects and the benefits.  She cannot have another course of chemo until her health improves, and the swelling may take some time to go down.  Man, that crazy woman sure knows how to beat the odds.  Less than 10% of patients even have their tumors stop growing on the chemo that she is on and less than 4% of patients her age with the kind of cancer she has are alive after 2 years and she was diagnosed almost 2 years ago.  Maybe I should take her to the casino .

I know that it hope for now, not hope forever but she really, really didn't want to die at Christmas time (members of my family have a habit of dying in the month leading up to Christmas) and it looks like she probably won't, where before the outlook seemed pretty grim.  If the swelling goes down enough she might even make it out to my brother's for Christmas dinner.

Such good news somegirl!  I

Such good news somegirl!  I was just about to wondermail you to ask how things were going - and here's the news!

Indeed, steroids (such as prednisone) can really affect people's state of mind and behaviour.  It's such a tough thing when they are needed for one reason, but cause a raft of other problems - as they often do.  When the drugs are tapered down, things usually do get back to baseline.

My mom-in-law used to go on them from time to time for her lung problems & we usually had to hire a night sitter to stay with her at the hospital because she would become so delirious.   I do remember those days - and nights - well.

I do strongly believe that some extent ill people choose their time to die - so I do think that, from what you've said, your mom will not be making her exit during the holiday season. She's pretty self determining from what I recall you saying.   Life is a mystery, isn't it.   Wishing you all well.  C.

It would be so good to have

It would be so good to have Christmas together again -- good news.

And if she could do that, maybe you guys could go and blow a little cash at the casino.  With the way her luck is running, she might win big.

holy crap...   constitution

holy crap...

constitution of an ox.

my grandparents were like that... all kinds of diseases and lived way past their expiry dates.  i figure that its because they were immigrants... when you look at the conditions that they had to endure to get to canada, not to mention survive here, the only ones who lived were the ones who had the strong genetic makeup.

thats my theory.
