Well... my birthday earlier this month was different in that my family was actually in town...
As a result, I got some birthday money and decided that being responsible is absolutely no fun at all. I decided I should spend it on something I would normally never spend it on.
So... after poking around a bit, I booked myself into one of the (if not THE) poshest spa in the city for their Hamam treatment.
Hamam is apparently a Turkish Bath. I'm doing the fully loaded package:
- I arrive, shower, and am given slippers and a small towel to wrap around my waist.
- I'm given Turkish tea and a small treat to sustain me through the treatment.
- I go into a heated room and rub aromatic salt on me and wait around for 15 minutes or so.
- An attendant will rinse me off and then I'm led into another hot room to relax for an hour or so.
- An attendant will retrieve me and take me to a private room where I will be soaped and scrubbed down from head to toe with an olive oil soap.
- An attendant will give me a flexibility-enhancing stretching massage.
I have NEVER been to a spa and I have NEVER had a massage. I'm a bit nervous.
This happens on the afternoon of Friday, April 1.
Anyone done this before???

Youth, you are going to have a wonderful time!
I'm not sure where you are going, but in TO we have a place called Body Bliss Spa that is mostly about 'Taking the Waters', although I hear they also have spa services, like massage and hot stones, etc.
(I don't even know your gender, so this may not apply as it is women only)
The waters are taken in a specific order, from warm pool to sauna, to shower to sauna to cold pool to hot pool...you get the idea. They have teas and juices (organic and fresh) which are lovely to enjoy. One gets dehydrated, despite the water everywhere.
I've been twice. I can't wait to go again.sigh....

Yep. It's called foreplay. Although paying for it seems a bit shady.

Just got back from this a little while ago...
I was given a small cotton cloth to wrap around my waist. I started by going into a warm room, where I was given a mint tea and a couple Turkish delight candies/treats. We sat in there for about fifteen minutes, or so. (I say "we" cuz there was also a couple there.)
Then the attendants took us into the hot room. The hot room is very dark and only lit by a starscape of mini lights on the ceiling. We each took a quick shower first, then sat around a steam... thing. It constantly emitted steam. We each had a small bowl of coarse salt that we rubbed over our bodies. At this point, we split up -- the couple continued the rest of their session with an attendant, and I continued mine with my own attendant.
I went to the other side of the hot room and laid down on the large marble tile area. My attendant poured bowls of water over me to wash off the salt. He massaged my feet, legs, and head, then poured bowls of water over me to wash off all of the lotion or stuff used for the massage.
I was left there in the heat on the marble deck to relax and sweat for about twenty to thirty minutes, or so. My attendant took me to a little room off to the side and gave me my massage -- which consisted of a scrub, a complete body wash, a hair wash, and a stretching massage. Throughout the process, and especially at the end, my attendant poured bowls of water over me. Some bowls were hot, some warm, some cool, and a few cold...
After that, I was taken back to the warm room to self-apply some aloe vera gel. And following that I put my bathrobe on and was taken to a lounge and given a salty yogurt drink that is traditional for Turkish Baths. Then I wandered back to the main lounge and loaded up a plate of free snacks.

My attendant knew it was my first spa/massage experience ever. Every once in a while he would ask me how I'm doing... all I could manage was something like "mmmhhhggfmm..." or a thumbs up...

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Friend of mine went straight to the spa after doing his volunteer work doing kids story time at the library. He was young and rather naive, but now he's permanently injured.

I was fine. I wonder if hot yoga helped with that -- cuz that exercise is all about stretching and flexibility, so I didn't have any tense muscles or knots in my back or anything... I felt exhausted more than anything else...
