Did you check out the online campaign to engage youth from TruthFool Communications?
The link leads to a site called (Excrement - yep the bad word)HarperDid and I have to say, it's quite good. OK. it's definitely anti-Tory but I'm not a fan. Still, if it gets apathetic hipsters to even think about something other than their oversized glasses, and how they might be able to make change through democracy ... well, I'd be a happy camper.
(I've lived too close to Ossington Avenue in Toronto, for too long. You can tell. Forgive my bitterness?)
I wish that I knew some 20 somethings to send it to. Maybe you can.
Love to know if the young ones will vote ...
What do you think?

Harper decorated the government lobby in parliament with photos of just himself, instead of the traditional portraits of former Prime Ministers.

I wasn't able to get the actual website, too busy I think. I did get some articles. I'm posting them for those who can't seem to access the site at the present time.
First it was the "Government of Canada." Then it was "Canada's New Government." Now it's the "Harper Government."
Public servants from four different departments have confirmed to The Canadian Press that they received a directive late last year that the words "Government of Canada" in federal communications be replaced with "Harper Government."
http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/story/2011/03/04/pol-harper-govt-brand.html
The cost is in dispute. Correctional Services Canada estimates an increase in prisoner numbers of 3,400, requiring 2,700 new spaces, at a cost of $2 billion.
Parliamentary budget officer Kevin Page thinks that lowballs the price tag. His office puts the increase in prisoner numbers at 4,200, at a cost of $1.8 billion for facility construction and $3 billion more a year for operations and maintenance. Page suggests that by 2015-16, annual prison expenditure will have increased to $9.3 billion from $4.3 billion.
The Liberals have made this "wasteful" spending central to their message, pointing out that Canada can ill-afford such expenditure at a time of declining crime rates. They say the Harper government is investing in "U.S.-style mega-prisons" when the Americans are retreating from such a model because it doesn't work.
The plan to buy F-35 Joint Strike Fighters will cost billions more than the $29-billion estimated by Canada’s budget watchdog, a U.S. defence spending analyst says.
“It’s going to be significantly more. It’s not going to be $1-billion more, it’s going to be significantly more,” said Winslow Wheeler, a defence-spending watchdog with the Washington-based Center for Defense Information.

And the last is different from the current how?
My net income - although the gross remains the same (a reality that is gross but I digress) - has actually declined over the past three years, thanks in part to Mr. Harper. Now I understand that the government of this country can't be concerned about *all* its citizens, but unlike the citizens in the top earning bracket some of us at the bottom are not feeling the love.
So if I have to suffer a tax and spend government, personally I would prefer one who sees the folk at the bottom of the pile and not just the ones at the top....

In 2007, Harper cut $1.2 Billion in spending for the establishment of quality national childcare. However, he never kept his promise to cut the $1.4 billion in tax breaks he gives to oil companies (the wealthiest corporations in history).

Tax man to hit Canadian workers harder in 2011
From Wednesday's Globe and Mail
Published Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2010 8:51PM EST
From the stockbroker to the sandwich-maker, nearly all Canadian workers will pay more income and payroll taxes in 2011.
The Canadian Taxpayers Federation released its annual tax calculations Tuesday and projected an average increase of 2 per cent in 2011 over 2010. The federation said Ontario residents will see the sharpest payroll tax hike, with British Columbia and Nova Scotia right behind them.
While those three provinces will be particularly hard hit, the federation’s report said the working poor – regardless of region – will be seriously affected.
“In previous years, there have almost always been winners and losers depending on income levels, family scenarios and what province one lives in. This year everyone loses, although some more than others,” said Derek Fildebrandt, the federation’s national research director.
The federation’s annual study found that while virtually every worker in Canada will pay more, taxpayers in provinces with inflation rates above the national average will see a disproportionate increase. In the federation’s research scenarios, Ontario residents saw an average increase of 4.3 per cent. B.C. and Nova Scotia workers came in at 2.9 per cent.

Besh, I provided three print and two video citations, not just one article. Must everyone do all the research for you. Watch the videos from the Canadian Tax Payers Association, they are not a lefty organization by any stretch of the imagination.
Rises in CPP and IE premiums hurt small businesses the most, but they hurt all business and citizens of this country because the cost is passed on, either through job cuts or price increases.
Did you not read that the increases were felt the most in three provinces, Alberta was not one of them. Aren't you the geographical lucky one despite your lack of reading comprehension.

You say:
If my taxes have increased, then Harper is bad.
That is not what I say. Harper says he has not raised taxes. He has.
Harper says corporate tax cuts benefit the people. They haven't.
Harper says under his party's rule government spending has decreased. It hasn't.*

Ergo: If it is acceptable to dismiss others for the disconnect between what they say and what they do, Mr. Harper et al. should be treated likewise.

The Right Honourable Stephen
Posted on: 04/18/2011 08:42
The Right Honourable Stephen Harper has little interest in the truth. How many remember the fall of 2008 when Harper and Flaherty were determined to do nothing about the evolving financial crisis, insisting it was better for the economy to sort itsel out than for the government to intervene. The possibility of losing power led to prorogation and the creation of an action plan in line with what the other parties were demanding for the reopening of Parliament in January of 2009. Now he claims credit for a plan that was forced on him by the other parties.
The financial situation in the summer/fall of 2008 was more serious than it is now, yet he was willing to violate his own election law by calling an unnecessary election at a time when government needed to stay active to better respond to this evolving crisis. I wonder why his language in this campaign is opposite to his actions 2.5 years ago?

Posted on: 04/18/2011 15:33
What has changed since 2008? The impression I have is that Harper was so irritated at not getting a majority in 2008, that he has been kind of sticking it to everyone except his business friends from his National Citizens Coaltion days.

Posted on: 04/19/2011 06:23
That's fair, at the same time, I see that since 2005 spending on environment increased by 50%, there was double the amount spent on housing, 25% increases in health, education, social services, regional planning, research, and only about 20% more in general governmental costs. All of this while reducing GST, debt charges, and corporate tax.
You're right though, he did say that he spent less and actually spent more. That being said, do you really object to the things that had increased spending?
Not at all. What I object to is the Tory campaign that attacks the opposition for supporting increased spending in those areas. I, like your disregard for the veracity of YouTube posts, am not a fan of dis-ingenuity and would prefer to not have a man in power who believes it is an acceptable quality in a leader.
btw, did you notice the significant decrease in the surplus - another little fact that is never mentioned by our illustrious leader or his campaign managers, yet they consistently accuse their opposition of this nefarious activity failing to note that their own party has eroded the legacy of previous governments.
