I've been catching up on the news - something I shouldn't do because it is frankly annoying.
Came upon the little tempest in a teapot about a Tory junior cabinet member behaving badly at the Charlottetown airport. Apparently arriving 15 minutes before the flight this MP and assistant were - instead of contrite - enraged that the Airport wanted to follow procedures like security and enforcing luggage requirements.
Toronto Star - Critics say 'petulant' Helena Guergis must go
You can bet your over priced in-flight meal, that if you or I had behaved this way the plane would have taken off and after getting up close and personal with airport security officers we'd be enjoying the hospitality of the Charlottetown police station. But unlike most Canadian citizens, these two were afforded the courtesy of being allowed to board after the flight had been held to accomodate them.
I don't care what political colour a politician wears. I do believe that if they had to live like the rest of us they might actually make decisions that cover the reality the average Canadian lives instead of the rarefied air politicians breathe.

LB, and sigh, unbelievable and yet, knowing that some people think they are powerful and important as well as a cut above the rest of us, not.

What ever happened to a higher requirement being placed on people in positions of power or responsibility. They show definitely be expected to obey the same rules as the rest of us. In fact that requirement to do so should be higher. The only exception would be if they were on an important and unexpected government assignment and calls had been made to delay the take off and make sure that they were on that plane. Highly unlikely.

Hey, I just realized that

Hey, I just realized that I've thought of a good plot for a novel. A government official is in some small remote Canadian town. For some reason he has to get on the next plane out with some important documents (or medicine, or something) that has to reach the nations capital sap and no private planes are available.
His security forces try to reach the airport security, but there are tie-ups and delays. His taxi arrives at the airport and he rushes in to be confronted by a low level security person who insists on following the usual routine. Despite his protests, the plane takes off and disaster happens, just because the rules could not be broken.
Now to find a ghost writer who will know how to expand it into a book and put all the finishing touches on it.

Personally, I would just like to see everyone behave with a little courtesy to one another. No higher standards for anyone but a decent standard for all.
From check out counters to airline queues, people push, shove and fume. For what? To rush home and watch TV?

just 2 nights ago, Toronto had a councillor totally go off the rails, screaming at a resident who was questioning something or other. This lady (councillor) was belligerent and taunting and rude, and went on and on while the chairperson tried to insist she 'calm down'.
Not only did it make the paper, they printed the exchange word for word. She looks like a total ass. (sorry to donkeys everywhere).
We all need to grow up and behave and treat each other respectfully. Our politicians need to stop acting like celebrities and more like leaders.

In this province we had an MP 'flip the bird' and shake a fist at another member. His punishment was less than that handed out to a high school student caught on a hall monitor doing the same thing to another student a few weeks earlier.
How are our young people going to learn proper and acceptable behaviour if they can't look to their MPs, their police force, their teachers, ministers, parents to set an example. Yes, I think everyone should follow the rules and practice kindness and courtesy, but I still expect more from those we place in positions that should entice respect.

The same thing happened in the riding that I used to live in when I was in Ontario. It was in the House of Commons and made front pages everywhere. People were furious... and then voted him back in come election time!
Is that the best option we've got?!

When my son was in Grade Four he happened to see some tv coverage of Parliament in session. He observed "Wow, they are so lucky they don't have MY teacher, she'd never let us behave like that".

The recession has been going on for how long now and the PM and cabinet members have gotten salary freezes. What about job cuts? What about salary reduction like the rest of Canada?

There's the solution, folks. Stop choosing one of the politicians to be speaker. Instead, hire a retired teacher to do the job and tell him/her to treat the Commons as if it were a classroom.
