US poliey, reagan, understanding politics

"To watch the courageous Afghan freedom fighters battle modern arsenals with simple hand-held weapons is an inspiration to those who love freedom. Their courage teaches us a great lesson-that there are things in this world worth defending. To the Afghan people, I say on behalf of all Americans that we admire your heroism, your devotion to freedom, and your relentless struggle against your oppressors." President Ronald Reagan  -     March 21, 1983

The freedom fighters were largely the Taliban.

Yes and the Taliban were

Yes and the Taliban were heavily financed by the US, and trained by the CIA, which is one of the main reasons they were able to seize power after they Soviets pulled out.

Try to tell the average American that now thought, lol

secstats were Alexander Haig,

secstats were Alexander Haig, and then George Schultz..

Things don't change. There is now an American assassination squad out to kill an American citizen "on suspicion". He's a moslem now staying in a moslem country. The news doesn't say much about it, but the president has to right to order the assassination of American citizens without charge of evidence of anything. The CLU is trying to fight the current case.

it's insane. the US has

it's insane. the US has created a world of enemies, and it makes more every day by its use of violence. I know some people think I'm too critical of the US. Well, it killed nobody knows how many millions, mostly civilians, in Vietnam. It killed one and a half million in Iraq. Nobody has a count for AFghanistan - but again it' seems to be mostly civilians. It killed 200,000 in Guatemala.jwhole villages right down to babies. It has given almost no aid to haiti. It's "aid" has been soldiers to keep the country quiet after the only elected, democratic leader they had was exiled by the US. It maintained dictatorships over much of Latin America, dicttators who killed and tortured and stole. The US has been at war more often than any other country in the world for ever since 1775. It has invaded courties on at least 175 occasions. It staged a rebellion that stole one third of Mexico, and called it Texas. They annexed Hawaii on the with of Wealthy pantation owners like Dole, and reduced the native population to poverty.  Oh, and I skipped over the slaughters that were called Indian wars.

The US has a far more violent history than we recognize. Now, in a state of fear and hysteria, they're spreading violence all over the world. And driving themelves broke in the process.

Iraq is destroyed. There has been no rebuilding. No government can function. there. Millions are still refugees. Unemployment is something like fifty percent.

Now, Obama, president of a country with millions unemployed and underemployed, with police forces being cut because states are broke, with unemployment benefits run out for miillions, Obama is going to keep 50,000 troops in Iraq, some ten years after Bush declared mission accomplished. But they'll still be on the payroll because he needs more in Afhghanistan. Many of the troops remaining in Iraq will be "private contractors". That means hired thugs - with no exaggeratioon. Andthat means Obama cannot possibly spare money to keep American schools open, and American famiilies fed.

This is a nation in hysteria with one of the most corrupt governments in the world. (In the health care debate, there were six lobbyists for each congressman - spending most of their time giving money and offering various benefits. And it worked.

This is a nation in hysteria, fear, disillusion. With its power, that makes it the most dangerous country in the world.

I don't think we begin to recognize how far democracy has collapsed in the US, and how indiscriminately vioilent it has become.

I strongly recommend seeing

I strongly recommend seeing the movie "Charlie Wilson's war". It's a very good movie in it's own right and is pretty accurate historically. Charlie Wilson was alive to advise on it and apparently wasn't shy about hiding anything include sex and drugs that would destroy most politicians (he retired at his own leisure years ago). There's a comment late in the movie that "we won the war but lost the peace" in Afghanistan and I think that's pretty accurate. If we had put a fraction of what we're spending now militarily, into schools and roads and farms back then it would be a radically different world now.

I agree that we are looking

I agree that we are looking at a different enemy, during Reagan's time the greatest threat was the Soviets. There were signs that the Islamists were starting to become a problem, but nothing like today. Unfortunately we are still under-estimating the threat. Asians look through a long timeline, we are still looking for the drive-through. We allow them too much leaway over here whereas they don't allow westerners the same benefit.

I think the real enemy is

I think the real enemy is the business or war.  America as a country or group of people isn't evil.  Just uniformed -- the most entertained people on the planet - and the least informed.  The huge influence of what I would call "coporatism," the business of war has manipulated almost every facet of American daily life. More than a shame.  Oh what a minute, this guy warned us about it fifty years ago....

Timothy - What threat were

Timothy -

What threat were the soviets? What countries did they invade after 1945? In the cold war period, the US invaded latin american countries manyl times. It, with the British and French, invaded Iran. The British invaded Egypt. France and the US invaded Vietnam. The US led and supplied a genocide of Maya people in Guatemala.

Tell me about the Soviet invasions of that period. The only Soviet effort I can think of offhand is Afghanistan. And now the US is doing it, with similar results.

Terrorism is not a threat. Common sense should tell you terrorists cannot possibly kill on the scale the US has been killing on for the past 60 years. Islamic terrorism is not  a threat. It is a reaction to the American threat.

Do no so easily assume that we are the good guys with Jesus as our commander in chief.

Granton, you're quite right.

Granton, you're quite right. People in North America do not have access to anything like complete or even truthful news. Most news outlets serve, essentially, as propaganda outlets. We passed 1984 a long time ago.

 Not taking away your

Not taking away your assessment of the US Graeme, but countries like East Germany, Yugoslav, Czech, Poland, Austria -- may not have been invaded in the traditional sense by the Soviets, but the Soviets certainly made their presence felt.

Just because people don't acknowledge the guilt and lies of America, does not make the Soviets innocent little doves.  Perhaps Mr. Solzhenitsyn would have something to say...

And you know, one could argue you are leaving out Chile, Burma, Argentina as victims of America's invading corporatism, a war and army of a different sort.

Where did I say the Soviets

Where did I say the Soviets were innocent? Even today, you will find no colder leader than Putin. I'm afraid we're all of us into a state of barbarism. The test of that will be Iran. I don't think people generally understand this, but there is no possibility of the US and Israel defeating Iran in a conventional war. Nor is there any evidence that Iran is building nuclear weapons. We are on the edge of what will almost certainly be a disastrous war. And the fast-fading American Empire is closing schools and shutting down desperately needed social programmes so it can squander hundred of billions on losing wars.

There's an hysteria abroad. And Harper is going to commit us to the hysteria.
