Spoiler: Don't read the final paragraph if you care about not knowing certain aspects about the plot, but save your money and wait for DVD release is my bottom line... It's worth seeing there from my perspective, just 'cause it's Peter Jackson and for Tucci's villian, who was almost as good as Phillip Seymour Hoffman in MI III, IMHO). Generally, it was more trite and less believicable than Jackson's other fantasies and neither worth the theatre trip nor the admission price, in my view, and I had been looking forward to a Jackson film on (well, anything at all, but) something he's not tackled before.
The depiction of all but the here and now was way too new-agey for me and cheap schmaltz / sentimentality was all I got here (possibly unsurprizing, though I liked how the 'dark side' was portrayed in "Ghost".) The script seemed mediocre and the acting so-so overall - though better than I could do, of course - but nothing brought me into the film in any emotional way (I love it when I am pulled in to a movie). Oh... and as a potential buyer of a RED camera ('body' only), I was pleased to see yet another flick shot with this system.
Spoiler (final warning): The demise of the villain seemed especially cheesey, with an icicle and an unfenced parking lot / cliff that's completely unreal for any First World country at least. I'm surprised that something more credible wasn't chosen for this - it seems to me that something better would have been easy to write, even if it's like this in the book (dunno about the book, but I wouldn't get it now anyway). And the baseball bat / running scene with Wahberg and Weisz was another low point. Again... overall, I'd say DVD/home theatre or possibly avoid completely and spend ~3 hours doing something else.

My book club read the book.

My book club read the book. A dude. Nothing deep or meaningful about it which was what the build-up had led us to expect. Just a murder mystery that kind of starts off backwards. I'm not sure how closely the movie followed the book - but this is one where I wouldn't care. In my mind a completely forgetable novel. The title was the most interesting thing about it.

I guess that a book that was on the bestselling list for over a year must have appealed to some people LOL

Its funny Jes. Some books on the best seller list really appeal to me. I read them, enjoy them, and sometimes reread them. Others? Well, I just question how they got there? Who reads them? What do they see in them?
Some books that have been really popular but that didn't appeal to me: Tuesdays with Morley; The Divinci Code; and The Shack.
It's a good thing that we all have different tastes.

i always wait for movies like these to hit the movie store. we save the theatres for the kids stuff (toy story 3 and alice in wonderland, both in 3D - CAN'T WAIT) or stuff with special effects or superhero movies.

I read the book Lovely Bones many years ago. I thought it was pretty good. Certainly a good concept. ...I like it.

I think the ending was cheesy

I think the ending was cheesy as well. I think that it was terrible that the girl's body ended up in that sink pit ewww. Hope I don't have nightmares.
Dying with an icicle falling on his head? Not believeable.
The daughter's boyfriend nearly killing the dad was terrible too.
The kiss between Suzy and her boyfriend of 2 minutes was a little far fetched. The scene was nice but it is not like these two were in any kind of relationship.
