Divorce - Who Should get the Dog?

This question was on CNN this morning.

Is a pet an asset?

Is a pet a member of the family like a child?

Who should get the dog? The one who takes him to communion?

I think the dog should go

I think the dog should go with whoever is closest to it and most capable of taking care of it.

So not much different from the reasoning for who should get the kids, really.

There was a couple on our street who divorced.  No kids but a lovely Goldern Retriever.

wife moved to california.  took dog and then every 6 months they met somewhere in the midwest and traded the dog for the next 6 months.  It was odd to sometimes see him walking the dog and then not for months at a time.

Seemed pretty extreme to me but then they didn't have kids and seemed to have lots of income.

When our best friends split

When our best friends split they arranged joint custody of pets.  The kids rotated every 7 days, the pets every 14.

I am not kidding.

I agree that pets should be

I agree that pets should be considered in the same way that kids are, although I might stop short of "pet support" payments.

That's some sorry dog if you can only get two cats out of it.

Cats for a dog?  Man that is like getting two monopoly 5's for a Canadian 10.

Grace and peace to you.

I don't know about other

I don't know about other families, but if it happened in my family the dog would have stayed with me in our home.  He would have been welcome to visit occasionally.

If you had asked the dog, she would have agreed.  Of course she would stay with me - the one who fed her, groomed her, trained her, took her to the vet (and to visit her boyfriend when the time was appropriate), helped with her babies and found them good homes.  It was me who was her companion.  She came with me on walks.  She followed me on the cross country ski trails through the woods.  She went camping with me. She went on car drives.

So what if he was the one who wanted a dog in the first place, and paid for her.  Years of companionship made her mine.

Fortunately the problem never came up.

What if...

Euthanise the pets, seize all of the assets and turn them over to charity and make any kids wards of the state. This way, the partners would be free to move on, unencumbered and without regrets... or they might find that, with nothing to fight over, they'd prefer to work out their issues.

You can't lump all dogs into

You can't lump all dogs into the same category.  There's the good, bad and ugly, just like with anything else.  I'm sure the good ones are a bit embarassed at the bad ones:

Because of this, one can't generalize all dogs as being slobbery behemoths.  I mean, look at these:

They don't quite fit the stereotype you've put forth, do they, Jae?

Okay Azdgari, you make a good point. Those are almost as cute as cats are.

I have to laugh at this

I have to laugh at this thread.  My husband would likely divorce me if I came home with another dog.  He barely tolerates the one we have (a black lab who is adorable but lacks a well developed brain!).

I'm kind of with the cat

I'm kind of with the cat people here (for us it'd be a non-issue) but my wife and daughter love the chihuahua. The only way it'd stay with me is if it was the only way to keep it for our daughter.

If my hubby and I split (which I hope never, ever becomes an issue) I'd get any  cats we owned, he could have any dogs.

Another take on cats for a dog is our home where the cats are definitely pets for the bigger dog and mentors for the little one.

Blackbelt - Roxy is adorable.  I think that if there was ever a question, you should stay with your spouse for the dog's sake.  I can't see anyone parting with her.

My nephew and his common law

My nephew and his common law wife separated.  She got the house.  They got the cars that were in their separate names.  He got the dog.   She tried to get visitation but was unable to.  The dog was registered in his name so that was the deciding factor.  They lived together for over two years so I am not sure that it was fair that he get the dog.
