I was at work the other night talkin to two of my coworker/friends and I'm not sure how, but the topic of animals going to heaven came up. It was a pretty heated debate on the yesses and nos and reasons why. I came to my own conclusions about it but i'm pretty sure i'll change my mind about this one.
Its not something that gets talked about after you've passed the age of seven. All Dogs Go To Heaven was a pretty convincing movie, of course. But now i want to know what you think, oh wondercafe writers!
DO animals have spirits and/or souls and is it possible that little animal ghosties are also present in heaven? and why would they be?? or why wouldn't they?

I think that animals are a manifestation of God's love and that they don't necessarily have individual spirits, but rather share a common "love" spirit which exists everywhere. So, ya, animals go to heaven.

Hi breaktown: Some Zen

Hi breaktown:
Some Zen sects have "Koans," test questions by which the Master tests whether the novice has attained enlightenment.
On famous Koans is: "Does a dog have a Buddha nature?"
The "right" answer to this question cannot be learned; the Master merely judges whether the answer is logically contrived or intuitive, and if the answer is intuitive, and indicative of enlightenment, then the novice passes.
If, as I believe, God is the cosmic totality, in a state of synthesis, then animals are as godly as we, but lack the potential to become aware of this.

Well, you know, instead of having a unique spirit, Animals are just "inanimant objects" that have been blessed with God's love, making them the beautiful creatures they are. So, they're all just like little mirrors reflecting God's love from the sky for us to bask in!

hey arminius--
i really liked what you said. "animals are as godly as we, but lack the potential to become aware of this." i guess thats what kinda seperates humans from all other creatures :p it definitely makes sense.
so, animals have a subconcious spirit that longs to be with god in heaven and yet the animal itself was so created on instinct that it doesnt acknowledge this...?

Hey Arminius, good answer - I always love to see what you have to say. One question though - if animals are as godly as we are should we be vegetarians - since we are aware of their being as godly as we are?

Good and interesting quote.
It seems to me that all of creation is sacred. I am busy enough looking after the living. I will leave the dead to God. If humans go to heaven, whatever that may be, then in all likelihood so do the animals.
I do believe in the unity that Arminius speaks of. However one may conceptualize it we do ultimately remain as part of the Divine.

Well, CNWKaren, plants, too, are as godly as we are. They are little less evolved in consciousness than animals, who are a little less evolved than we. Life comes down to one form of God consuming another, or one form of life consuming another. As long as we do it with due respect, and take no more from the whole than we give back to IT, or preferably give back a little more than we take, then we can't go too wrong.

This one is easy for me. I don't believe in souls or the afterlife at all. However, if you believe that humans have souls, then it would be reasonable to believe that animals have them too, since humans are animals. It's as simple as that.

I don't know chapter and verse but there's something in Revelation that says "all good things will be granted unto you in Heaven". I'd definitely think that a beloved pet counts as a "good thing".

Has anyone ever read that book - I think the author is Mary Roach - it's called "Spook" and it's her research on the soul and the afterlife. Anyway... there were some experiements done around the turn of the century (I think ) where dying TB patients were weighed before and immediately after dying and they all were 21grams less right after dying - interesting enough. Then they tried it with dogs and there was no weight difference. The only thing was - the dogs were killed while the people died naturally. Just an interesting tidbit I thought I'd put out there. Whatya'll thing about that? Personally I think if people have a soul animals do too. Just seems logical to me.

Posted on: 04/23/2009 14:00
Hi Karen:
If the soul is the memory body of the brain—which gets etched by the by brain in the form of a hologram into inverse space, and remains after the body dies—then dogs could indeed have a soul.
Doesn't "dog" spell "god" backwards?
Maybe the human hologram in the head of some weighty thinkers weighs 21 grams?
After my mystical peak expereience I felt a welt across my forehead. It seemed as if the vision of the night before had expanded my brain and pushed out my forehead. But what, if anything, had expanded? My soul? Like the heart of the Grinch?

Hello everyone ....God bless you...
God is love and I believe anything that we love will be with us in heaven...anything that is living now and animals are living...plants trees...the bible says that earth is just a shadow of heaven...I take it this would mean all of creation...
God also says He will give us the desires of our hearts..wow that could cover alot ...if I loved animals here I would see no reason why God would not let me have the ones I lost here to enjoy in love , just as we will see our loved ones again..anything we love with our hearts will be given to us ...amen and amen...
