Our charge has no Ash

Our charge has no Ash Wednesday service. Personally, I wish it did. The ritualism and symbolism was meaningful to me in my mom's church, even though I was not yet a Christian.

I have seen it done with only last years palms burnt and also with notes. I liked the personalism of symbolic act with the notes.

Hi Crazyheart,   I'll be

Hi Crazyheart,

I'll be presiding in my first Ash Wednesday Service in roughly an hour or so.

We tossed the service together when one of our Music Directors wanted to offer a free recital of Lenten classics so . . .

Much music along with a confession and the imposition of ashes is the order of the day.

The playlist is as follows:

Abide With Me

I Want Jesus To Walk With Me

Jesus, Keep Me Newr The Cross

Were You There?

What Wondrous Love Is This

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,

Nearer, My God, To Thee

Jesus, Lover Of My Soul

Lamb of God/Old Rugged Cross

O Sacred Head Now Wounded

God So Loved The World

Go To Dark Gethsemene

A healthy dollop of African-American spirituals due to it being Black History Month as well as some of the old chestnuts of the Christian faith.

Grace and peace to you.

John

Our church does not have an Ash Wednesday service, but the study group I go to in the evenings does.  We have a short liturgy and then do the ashen cross on the forehead.  I still have to burn my palms!

No. (I did have a lovely service of chicken on a bun with a side of onion rings for lunch).

Several churches in our

Several churches in our presbytery are getting together to offer all non-Sunday services. For each occasion, two services will be offered - one traditional and one contemporary. The churches will take turns hosting and ministers from several congregations will share in the leadership of each worship. Today we have services at 4PM (traditional) and 6PM (contemporary). I will be attending the later one, partially because I will still be at work for the first one. I hope that I will leave the service with a feeling that I have entered into Lent.

For me, it's a vehicle that God uses to empower us to be more honest about our vulnerability as human beings. Truth in the Ashes.

The congregation i'm a member

The congregation i'm a member of had a 7pm serice. About 10 people showed up. Music-trumpet, nots that were burned-then mixed with oil and crosses drawn on forheads or hands.

It was a magical moment when our minister lit the notes aflame with a candle. Ashes flew up above her head and she looked like a wizard in her robe stirring our sins away!
