Today a historic event happened in my town. My best friend's mother was ordained as a deacon in our anglican/grace united church.
This is special for several reasons.
I attended the ceremony out of respect for her achievement and her family. It was great until the crazy pentecostal minister started speaking in tongues lol. (Members from every church in town were there on behalf of the Hay River Ministerial Society). And might I say "Onward Christian Soldiers" is a very long song...especially when you add in the droning style of most church singing lol.
But beyond that, hats off to her.
As-salaamu alaikum, ramadan mubarak.

As for Onward Christian Soldiers, they needed the worship team from my church. Those guys would have put some Ooomph into it.

Do you mean that she is the first of Slavey heritage, or the first of Aboriginal heritage?

He must mean of Slavey since there have been First NAtions ANglican priests for many years (and to be a priest you have to first be a deacon). And I assume, but don't know for sure, that there are First Nation female priests.
As for Onward Christian Soldiers it doesn't matter how fast you sing it it is still a terrible hymn IMO

I like the tune, but obviously I disagree with the words. My Friend afterwards was telling me (along with how he was doing his best to stifle laughter towards the person speaking in tongues), "Don't you just feel like the whole congregation is talking to you when they sing that song? Don't you find it scary?" and I was puzzled. He replied "Well, your a muslim, and i'm an agnostic..." we had a good laugh over that.
I'm sure it's not aboriginal, it's slavey. But it might also be the first aboriginal woman too, i'm not sure.

I found hymns really uncomfortable in church, always felt they were anti-me (if only they knew what I think). And at my Uncle's funeral last year, I'm SURE the pastor was refering to the "unsaved" in his sermon about the hereafter! Most disrespectful!

I've always liked the poetic simplicity and innocence of fundamentalist hymns. Does anyone know the classic -
I am saved I am. I am saved I am.
I am S-A-V-E-D.
eat your hearts out, all you moslems.

Well, graeme, Muslims don't need to be saved—they already are.
Remember: we, not they, are the infidels.
