Gift cards and Agape

I saw rhis on the news this morning but wasn't able to find it on google.

It is said that millions of dollars of gift cards stay in people's purses and wallets and are not used,

A talented couple decided to try and do something about this. they asked people to give them the gift cards they wouldn't use, didn't use or had forgotten about.

They , in turn, found recipients that needed help.

For example, a family with a desperately ill child had to make a trip across the US to see doctors. They were given gas cards for gas, hotel rooms, food and whatever they might need to get them their safely.

It now has become a full time job for this couple.

Wish i could find the story but it sounds good to me.

What do you think?

How many gift cards do you have lurking around your house - not used?

Greetings!   I have a subway

Greetings!

I have a subway (or rather Mr. Beloved does) from last Christmas - probably expired now though.  I also have an itunes card that I have never used.  I believe those are the only two right at this moment, but in the past I have had gift certificates expire for manicures, restaurants, etc.

Probably the biggest one some people might not use up are airmiles.

Hope, peace, joy, love ...

I guess I'm not big in gift

I guess I'm not big in gift cards - but I do receive one occasionally.  Last year I got one for Chapters.  Now I prefer to give my business to a locally owned independant book store, but I did find my next book club book at Chapters.  I got a $50 gas card.  I always buy my gas at the Co op store for a few cents off the regular price - but I was able to use the gas card on a trip.  I regifted my bowling gift certificate to a family - I bowl in a league and that was a restriction on the card.    Right now I have one for Winners.  I think I will slip it in my daughter's sock.  She will use it for herself or the kids.

I don't think most gift cards have expiry dates on them any more.  I believe it is illegal.

And I do think that donating them to charity would be a wonderful idea.

What a wonderful idea. I don't think people think of gift cards quite like "money" yet, although they're definitely popping up everywhere this year. That's probably a factor in letting them rattle around in purses and drawers. Getting that value back into circulation in a charitable way is terrific.

I'm pretty sure stores aren't

I'm pretty sure stores aren't allowed to put short expiry dates on them - they are money, after all.

I don't have any, unless maybe one with a few pennies on it.

I got  55 dollars worth of

I got  55 dollars worth of gift cards from Tim Horton's and Starbucks.  So far I have used them for $20 worth of tea bags from Horton's.  I intend to use them all and to stock up on tea, coffee, chocolate, etc to keep at home.

I got all these cards from people who don't know me that I see at work.

If they wanted to give me something, it would have been nice to get gift cards to grocery stores, or better yet, equivalent cash.

I won't waste them because I'm going to buy tea anyway.

That's wasteful.  The smart thing to do would be to carry them in one's purse or wallet and use them when possible.

In my case, I have $55 worth of gift cards for coffee shops and that's too much money to waste.

If you end up with more tea

If you end up with more tea than you can use - remember the food bank.  There are people out there that would love to have a cup of tea after a meal but who spend their money to buy milk for their kids.

Good idea.  Thank you Seeler.  Merry Christmas.

This is interesting and I

This is interesting and I good idea, although I did buy my son some gift cerfificates for his favourite restaurant that he frequents with friends every Wednesday night. Now I'll be sure to remind him to use them!

I also heard another story about a group of Veterinarians and the food bank that are asking for food donations for peoples pets. They mention that while it seems extravagant that the "poor"  should even have a pet, they ask us all to remember that very often a pet is a very real comfort to shut ins, the lonely, and families. Quite often we forget the benefit pets are. They also asked that this should not replace giving to the food bank. Sometimes it's hard to have food for both.

 We ALWAYS use our gift

We ALWAYS use our gift cards. Living on a low income we use every resource that comes our way.  But the very small balances that can get left on them are annoying. I think I have 60cents on one somewhere.

The gift cards I get are

The gift cards I get are presents from family and friends. I'm sure they intend for me to use them, and I will not disappoint them. If I were to do otherwise I would feel like I was implying that family love and friendship are meaningless.

I agree Aquila - those from

I agree Aquila - those from family have probably been chosen with care from people who know you well.  People who know your favourite coffee shop, grocery store, book store, etc.

Would you feel the same if a work colleague gave you a gift card for an unspecified amount at a store the other side of town that you never visit and that doesn't suit your style?

Companies love gift cards.

Companies love gift cards.   They know a percentage of them will never again see the light of day, so that's free money to them.  That said, they don't want that liability lingering on their books for years, but the government is making them honour their old gift cards.  They can be safe in the knowledge that at least they don't have to pay interest on the money.

I don't give them, and I rarely receive them.  I found an old LCBO gift card once, won by my wife in a curling bonspiel.  I put it to good use.

From a work colleague I would value the gift as well and use it should I ever be in that part of town. Basically as a poor person, if I'm legally given something that can act like cash I will use it.

Aquila - you have every right

Aquila - you have every right to do so, whether you are rich or poor.  Carry that gift card in your wallet for ten years in hope that you will be in that part of town and find something in that store that you might want.  Certainly no one can criticize you for it.  As for myself, I think that eventually I would be cleaning out my wallet and I would put the gift card in a drawer and forget about it.  Personally I would prefer to give it to charity where it might be put to good use.  To each his own - but I thought that you believed in charity.

Yes, seeler, I do. I simply give in other ways.

I personally love to get gift

I personally love to get gift cards. I usually get a few for Chapters and Indigo. As a matter of fact, I just got back from Indigo buying 65 dollars worth of books, of which, I did not pay a dime, thanks to gift cards.

I received two gift cards for

I received two gift cards for Chapters.  They were from family who live two provinces away.  They were much welcomed and will be put to good use.

I also received a gift card from an acquaintance.  If was for a store I almost never shop in, but my daughter does.  So it was regifted.  My joy will be in hearing that she got something for herself - she seldom does.
