The readers Digest came to day and apparently they had a poll. On the section The Professions We Trust The Most. ,Religious ministers rated 23. #1 was Firefighters, Ministers came below Plumbers, and TV Anchors. Why do you suppose?

Hi ninjafaery:
You are infatuated with roofers. Quit looking at them through your telescope. Look at the stars instead; that's what telescopes are for!
Obviously, roofers are closer to heaven than any other occupation.

I think the people's idea of a minister may very often be taken from the TV evangelists whose reputations aren't always the best. I wonder how many people in the poll have ever known a minister in person or apart from hearsay stories?

I have been thinking that the poll was misleading. The Professions that we trust most not the person in the profession. I would only trust roofing if my shingles were blowing off but THE ROOFER can be trusted explicitly.

Hi crazyheart, crazyheart

Hi crazyheart,
Why do you suppose?
Well, how many plumbers publicly blamed the Haiti earthquake on some voodoo pact? How many ministers? It doesn't really matter about the quality of either. Damage is done.
How many plumbers have been revealed to have covered up child sexual abuse committed by other plumbers? How many religious ministers?
How many plumbers have publicly denounced homosexuality only to be arrested soliciting gay prostitutes? How many religious ministers?
What plumbers do in their personal time is probably not a whole lot different that what religious minsters do in their personal time. Bad publicity smears a whole lot of mud on anyone standing near.
I wonder if the question was which hourly fee do you think is most appropriate, a plumber's or a religious minister's there might be a difference.
Grace and peace to you.

Here's the link from Readers Digest and some others.
Surveys were done in June and July by Synovate, an international polling organization. In the Netherlands and Finland, local firms were retained. Questions were posed online, by telephone, and in person to 17,000 respondents. The poll's margin of error is approximately 3 percent.
The American Academy of Science published a study of American medicine and concluded that between 90,000 and 150,000 patients are killed every year in America’s hospitals alone! Both Harvard and Johns Hopkins medical schools have conducted joint studies whose findings included the following: 1) You have a 1 in 5 chance of being seriously injured each time you go to see a doctor. 2) You have a 1 in 5 chance of being misdiagnosed with cancer. 3) For every day you spend in a hospital your chance of being injured or killed increases two-fold and, statistically, you will suffer a grievious bodily injury with long-term effects if you manage to survive the first week.

So that's why ministers aren't so highly esteemed! They don't make enough money to cut it! I noticed in one survey where people were asked their choice for careers for themselves they mostly chose professions paying the highest. Its like this in the student's high school year books too. They all plan on being millionaires.

Crazyheart,
What if the plumber said, "you do not need to read the faucet manual, I know what all it contains. Oh, and by the way your receipt is in Egyptian/Hungarian/Mandarin...(some language you do not know). But, don't worry, I know what it says"?
How about, "using copper pipes will make you go blind"?
How about, "your clogged toilet means you should disown your child"?
How about this one, "the water heater quit working because you are not loving enough to your spouse"?
How about, "I do not care that you cannot afford or do not want another washroom, you are having it."?
Better yet, "the plumbers union manual says it is illegal and dangerous to plumb a white home next to a black one"?
Now, ask yourself how many generations, people alive today can recall, that clergy said stuff like that and way worse... things we now look upon as misguided, manipulative, spiritual abuse, misinformation, down right evil.... to only say later... "uh, well... ummmm....let me see...." or "we were wrong" or say nothing or still believe it.
I cannot personally say I have never had a plumber or a tv anchor or a firefighter tell me that I was evil or disordered. They also never refused me service or said they could not wait for me to die and meet Satan.
Trust clergy? For some, it is very hard.

Is it really a surprise that in a nation which is increasingly secular and in which many people have had little if any contact with a minister, that ministers would rank low on the "trust scale?" People have far more contact with plumbers and TV anchors, and likely don't think much about ministers at all. People wouldn't automatically think to "trust" those whom they don't know. It would perhaps be more enlightening to see where we clergy would rank on a "distrust" scale. In the light of all the recent publicity around sexual abuse by priests I suspect we'd be pretty high on that list, although, again, lack of personal contact might result largely in disinterest.

I watched an interesting episode on the Law and Order about this.
A male homosexual prostitute was found dead in the graveyard of a Church. His cellphone was found and the minister's private office number was on his cell. Immediately the cops hauled the minister in for the murder (and rape) of the male prostitute though I am not sure how a prostitute can be raped.
The minister's wife shot him then for infidelity. The DNA off his hankerchief was a 6 point match which would never get a conviction.
I even believed that the minister did it. He confessed to it.
The minister's son ended up being a homosexual that purchased the prostitute's services and the elder of the Church was the one who murdered the prostitute.
The minister was guilty of cooking the Church books to pay off this prostitute not to go public about his gay son.
If I were to guess this is a hot topic now because traditionally the role of a minister WAS a trusted role and now the role is becoming more of a mockery in popular culture because the trust was so many times abused.

Houswife to roofer: "I love the way you nail."
Roofer: "In the olden days we did a lot of nailing, but today we do mostly screwing."
"What is the difference?"
"Nailing we do by hand, but for screwing we use our power tool."
