Searching for the name of a hymn (and lyrics if possible)

I can't for the life of me remember the name of a hymn that is really a favourite of mine. I know that it is often sung in United Churches (at least in the two I attended regularly). The person who is singing is saying something like (paraphrase) chose me God to be the person who helps you...

In terms of lyrics I thought it was something like "It is me, Lord" but the hymn that came up didn't look to be the same.

I know this is a needle in a haystack. I'm trying to put together a book of inspirational verses, lyrics, poems, etc to get me through a really hard time and I'd really like to include this and I'm "estranged" from my church at the moment.

It sounds to me like you are looking for "Here I am Lord"...

Does these sound/look familiar? (these versions are rather 'cheesy' but you'll get the idea)

www.youtube.com/watch

homewithgod.com/heavenlymidis2/here.html

If this isn't the one, can you include a few more paraphrases?  or the "story" of the song??

One more question: the example you gave ("The person who is singing is saying something like (paraphrase) chose me God to be the person who helps you...")...  do you mean to say that the main voice in the song is speaking to another person and saying that God had chosen them (the main voice) to help someone else???  Sort of like "we are God's hands and feet in the world"?  or "we are our brother's/sister's servants"?

If you can give me just a tad more to go on, I might be able to figure it out! (love church music and attend a few different denominations)

Could it be "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky" #509 in Voices United. The chorus is: Here I am Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night.......

Since you are putting together a book, may I also suggest:

#567 Will You Come and Follow Me

#222 Come,Let Us Sing

#87 I Am the Light of the World

These are all personal favourites and helped me through some difficult days too.

It could also be the Servantsong:

It must be, as Murtylemae said, VU # 509 "I, the Lord of Sea and Sky" One of my favourites!

Actually, all the ones Murtylemae listed are favourites of mine. But I would add another by the eminent Linnea Good: VU 82 "A Light is Gleaming"

Holy cow! You both rock! I am so impressed that you were able to get it - it is definitely Here I am Lord and I managed to find the lyrics too!

Thanks too for the suggestions of others - I'll look them up.

I like this one too.  Here is a nice Youtube version - including the lyrics

Here I am Lord

Another favourite of mine is Mississippi John Hurt's, Here I Am Lord, Send Me - you can listen to it at Last.Fm but you have to sign up to hear the full version.

LB - disappointed to discover the music site, SpiralFrog, is no more

Great hymn.

Here's a question for y'all.  Which verse or part of a verse is most closely your ministry?

LB's link is gorgeous, but it appears to skip my verse.

(footnote - in the UCC we sing "in darkest sin" in the first verse, not "in dark and sin")

One of my favourites ... thanks for those suggesting a look on youtube - I never thought of looking there for hymn music videos!  They were quite intriguing.

RevMatt - I'd have to chose this verse ...

I, the Lord of wind and flame
I will tend the poor and lame
I will set a feast for them
My hand will save

Hi RevMatt:

This is it for me:

Finest bread I will provide

till their hearts be satisfied,

I will give my life to them.

Whom shall I send?

Refrain

"I have heard you calling in the night"  -- that sense that there is something that I am being called to....that I am aware of a greater need than that which my life is focussed on in daily living.

Never did say what mine was:

"I the Lord of snow and rain,
I have borne my people's pain,
I have wept for love of them,
They turn away...

I will break their hearts of stone
Fill their hearts with love alone
I will speak my word to them
Whom shall I send?"

The last part, particularly.

I love the whole hymn. I can't possibly pick just one verse.

Hey Polaris!  That's the very same version I pasted into my first reply to you - did you see it?

Sorry about the "homewithgod" link not actually connecting - when I first found it, it did have the whole lyrics...that was my intention behind including it in the message.

Cheers!.

A.

Sorry A. Not sure what happened. I goofed. Sorry about that. My brain isn't working all that well these days and I totally missed it.

I was also pretty emotional. I am struggling with my connection with God right now - I have the belief that s/he is ashamed of me so this hymn is difficult.

thanks again

I think I would choose "Here I am, Lord". Although all the other words and verses have great meaning.

polaris.....God loves you....pure & simple...ashamed of one's own child, i think not.  Wishing better for you, maybe....but ashamed...unlikely.

Does anyone know if any of Carolyn McDade's music can be heard on internet?
