Happy Saturday morning everyone...do you have plans for the day? Plunk yourself down before you dash around and tell me about your week/day....
We're in the market for a new dvd player today...do I need to pay attention to brand names or just buy the best deal?

hey Penny! Have a few minutes

hey Penny!
Have a few minutes to drop in, then I have to go out. Weather here is rainy and freakishly warm here in the city, but I like it! Is there any mint tea? I no longer ask for DCwL, I have to wait for the Pinga Connection... LOL
I am not a tekkie, but I am surrounded by technogeek friends. I have a JVC DVD player that also burns DVDs. I think the term is DVD-R, or something like that. What I hope to find is a DVD-R/VHS machine, so that I can burn DVDs of the hundreds (literally) of movies that I have on VHS... I think it exists, but I have no interest in researching it... so if anyone here knows about such technology, bring on the info!!!
It is my understanding that JVC is one of the best on the market. Also, I believe it is not the cheapest, but does honour warranties and even problems/repairs after warranty. I understand that Panasonic is also good. That is really all I know.
How was your week?

If all you need is something
Posted on: 10/25/2008 10:51
If all you need is something to play the occasional rental DVD, go for the good deal, keeping in mind that a well-established brand is probably going to outlast the uber-cheap Wal-Mart brand.

I've packed up the VHS
Posted on: 10/25/2008 10:52
I've packed up the VHS machine all of the movies (mostly granddolly's) to drop off at the 2nd hand store...maybe I should look into the dvd that burns vhs movies first?
The weather has been typically AB style...cold winds that feel like snow and then very warm so you're peeling the layers off as the day goes on...and then adding them back on periodically.
I'm fall cleaning...but not really zipping through it this year. Are you in your friend's cottage?

Nighthawk...only granddolly
Posted on: 10/25/2008 10:55
Nighthawk...only granddolly watches the DVD player occassionally (should all of those letters be doubled??) so I don't think I need the "best" brand. Do you know a middle of the road brand that won't tank right away, but not full of bells and whistles...that I'll never use?

Posted on: 10/25/2008 11:04
Sometime toward the end of next week Penny. Got so much crazy ass red tape - read lawyers and bankers (and real estate deal makers) to deal with... plus the cottage is just being fitted with heat - still missing the all important thermostat control gadgets... so that I will not have to rely ONLY on woodburning stove - yeah, think of me, Redhead the city girl suddenly Redhead in Little House on the Prairie - probably great for a story, but not so good in real life... LMAO.
So.... the kitties and I shall go at the end of next week. I am looking forward to it - but not dial-up...
Yeah, you may be able to burn copies of granddolly's VHS tapes - I think... again, tekkies - where are you ? If so, this will save $$$
ALL I have been doing is cleaning, packing and storing....grrrrrrrrrr..... almost all books are packed away forever, it feels like...

Posted on: 10/25/2008 11:50
It'll be interesting to hear how the city girl survives in the country...I think you should write a blog and maybe a T.O. newspaper will pick it up...
My son's blog was noticed by a Nottingham newspaper and now he writes a column about a Canadian in limely land...he's also invited regularly to the BBC in Nottingham to chat. I think your lifestyle change would make an interesting read....
I'm just out for a bit to visit with a little town girl that wants to pet a horse...you should be here too, red!

Posted on: 10/25/2008 13:04
Penny, try and find one that plays multiple formats - that way if you download something from the Internet or create your own DVDs it will play on your player.
I created a little photo montage with music for the Church last month and discovered that not all DVD players are alike - some will not play MP files. I picked up one on the cheap out of necessity and it works fine.
DVD players are like stereos, it really depends on what you want. If you don't notice the quality difference - well, why pay the price...
PS, Red - the first thing you do in your new community is find the Wireless Internet provider - trust me it is one way the city girl will survive.

I can't think of any low-end
Posted on: 10/25/2008 13:00
I can't think of any low-end brands off the top of my head, but usually the bigger names will have simple, cheaper machines. On the Best Buy website, Toshiba and Phillips both had DVD players for 49.99. Future Shop.ca has an Insignia brand DVD player for 39.99. You can probably find cheaper if you hunt for bargains in-store, and look at stores like Sears, Bay, Zellers, etc.

Posted on: 10/25/2008 14:50
I would go for the cheapest one that is a brand that you can recognize. My mom got one of those uber cheap ones and it shorted to the case, not good.
You can hook your VCR up to your DVD player and record VHS onto DVD that way.

The wind has been blowing
Posted on: 10/25/2008 20:03
The wind has been blowing like the dickens here today - almost 80 km/hr all day. Kept having problems with power outages earlier today while I was on Wondercafe and lost posts three times while I was in the middle of writing them so I said to heck with it and went and had a nap Power has been back on now for a few hours so hopefully should be ok.
My advice re: DVD players - buy a brand name you recognize. You won't need any of the fancy features so the base model will do. I don't buy any of those really cheap brands that I have never heard of b/c my experience has been that they are absolute crap and spending the extra $20 or whatever for a recognizable brand name has been worth it especially when it comes to longevity.

I second this. You have no idea how agonizing dial up is once you've had a taste of high speed. If it were me, the extra $$ would be worth the sanity ...

Posted on: 10/25/2008 22:05
I'm a little paranoid, but I checked the "properties"of a hunk of text that's stuck in the box for the üpload image'' function. It's that latin stuff that appeared on a thread when the changeover happened. I tried to copy and paste it and now I can't get rid of it. Maybe I should try to go back and find the original thread.
I checked the url for the text and it was long and included the term "fkedit" and "fckeditor" -- don't much like the sound of that.
In answer to your question about platform, Redhead, I'm using the old work computer right now and that may have something to do with it, since my wondermail works fine on my laptop at home (apart from the pesky latin smut). I'm on a pc platform now, but would really appreciate a mac or linux right now.

We bought new lamps for the family room and decided to wait until next weekend for the dvd player...both of us have a 20 minute shopping tolerance! I feel well informed though...thanks!
Have any of you used Avon's Anew products? So many aging chickies were telling me how great it was so I ordered online...you can't believe how much free stuff I got

Posted on: 10/25/2008 23:22
I got my Retro Lush order yesterday. Here is what I got:
Happy 4 Sad shower gel - bright purple, smells like oranges
Happy bubblebar - citrus and sandalwood
Hollywood bubblebar - smells like Fever, for those of you who know Lush ... florally, hint of rose, reminds you of perfume from the 50's. Think femme fatale, red lips, pouty smile.
Fox in the Flowers bathbomb - smells like fresh cut grass.
Kiss Me Klimt bathbomb - rose and neroli (orange)
Green Day bubblebar - herbally smelling. I love it - I was so mad when Lush discontinued it before. Psyched that they brought it back!
Cocktail soap - haven't smelled it yet. Tried it on a whim.
I

There are two computers in my house, and the avatar thing is different on each of them. For a while, I was thinking that Crazyheart, LBMuskoka and Cjms were shifting back and forth all the time between two avatars.

Punkins. I recently bought some lush stuff as well and was VERY excited about a shampoo bar that I had bought that I thought smelled wonderful....flowery and earthy.
Specialdad emerged from the shower the next morning and yelled from the bathroom....."What is this yellow round bar in the shower? It smells like the worst kind of animal vomit ever." Alas, it is now in the garbage.
Good morning all...I gotta go get some coffee!

I like the Dream Creme from Lush. Haven't tried any of the other things, but sound lushus. On my next trip to the city, maybe I'll stop by the store.
I used to love Green Goddess soap from Burt's Bees, but they stopped making that too.In fact, it seems that everything I like gets discontinued. My favourite perfume was from Crabtree and Evelyn called "Millefleur" -- no longer made and can't be found anywhere.
I didn't see many bears at any time of year in the few years I lived up there. Maybe five times in total and never near my place, although I knew they were around. Don't leave anything out like garbage (they really love bacon wrappers), and bird seed. Most of the ones I saw were at the dump and too busy to bother much with people. They also hang out where the berries and fruit are in the fall. Make lots of noise (jangle keys, sing) so you don't surprise one. MNR has good info about bears.
Specialmom -- maybe men have different olafactory experiences. I once read that the smell of pumpkin pie is an aphrodisiac to them. Go figure.
