I need some movie suggestions. The group in question is grades 5-8, so 11-14 years old. Plus my daughter, who is 5 going on 30. I don't care whether the movie is religious or not, or has any redeeming social value, but I would like to avoid getting in trouble with parents (including my wife).
Any ideas?

The Ant Bully (ditto)
Kung Fu Panda (really funny)

City of Ember
Some of the movies like Pirates and Narnia may have some frightning scenes, but no blood or guts.

City of Ember is a good one for all ages, though there are a few potentially frightening scenes for a 5 year old depending on how sensitive she is. Night at the Museum is the same type of deal.
No offence to cf, but I think you are in for trouble with any of the spider man movies or the seeker as they are rated or reviewed as too mature for your younger kids (esp. the 5 year old, but also the 11 & 12 year olds).

Journey to the Center of the Earth is rated PG as well but there is no swearing and there are some "scarry" moments but nothing too scarry. It still gets my vote.

What was I watching:
Aladdin, Fern Gully (scared the hell out of me), Newsies (AWESOME!), The Mighty Ducks, Honey, I Blew Up the Kid, Home Alone 2 and Beethoven - although I was pretty sheltered compared to others my age.

I underscore the need to show them something they haven't seen so they don't get bored. Also - I hate to ask - but do you have a license to show movies to your youth group? (you need one) Our church gets a good license package for about $100/year.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind or ET are also good romps.

Posted on: 03/16/2009 18:54
If you can find it, Mad Hot Ballroom is a great documentary about kids the same age as those in your youth group from inner-city schools in New York learning ballroom dancing. The youth might enjoy it because it has a bunch of kids their own age in it. It came out a few years ago, but they may not have seen it because it's a documentary.
It's recent so they may have seen it, but kids that age could enjoy Big Fish. Might provide a lot of opportunity for useful discussions on truth, metaphor and story, if that's the sort of thing you're looking for.
The Emperor's New Groove is an oft over looked, but imo, totally awesome Disney movie that emphasizes the importance of cooperation and thinking about the feelings of others.

Very reasonable.
Not the question you asked, though. Will ponder movies. I have succumbed to Disney / Pixar movies, which can have multiple layers. I really enjoyed Wall-e; however, as others have mentioned better to go with an old movie.

You do know, RevMatt, that no matter what movie you choose you are going to be in trouble with someone!
Several years ago when I was involved with the youth (Grades 9-12) we used to have fun nights occasionally - sometimes a movie, but not always. Well one movie night (and I was somewhat under pressure to make sure there was not too much sex, no bad language, violence, etc. by the CE committee) I decided I would show the new Beverly Hillbillies movie (this was in the late 90s). I thought it would be hillarious and fairly clean. Well, I laughed all the way through it (reminiscing of course) - cement pond, grannys brew, the dining room with the pool table, etc. But the kids did not find it at all funny!
Hope, peace, joy, love . . .

Hehe. Princess Bride is an excellent idea. Yes, I'm looking for something that they haven't seen, so older is a good idea. Chocolat would be great, too, although maybe not interesting enough for my daughter. Mind you, she is just so thrilled to be with the big kids that that doesn't matter too much.
No, I don't have a licence, but we are at someone's house, not the church, so it doesn't matter. We only do one or two movies a year anyways, so $100 makes those very expensive movies.
Thanks for all the good ideas. Spaceballs is a good idea if they were all 13-14, but the 11 year olds are too young. Well, if they were my kids, I'd be OK with it, but they're not.
My daughter loves Fern Gully, though, and the others won't likely have seen it. Hrm.

Unless I missed it, you've all overlooked the height of Disney/Pixar animated movies... Finding Nemo. I've found that one almost never gets old... same with Monsters Inc and Shrek (though that's not Disney/Pixar).
Someone above mentioned Invisible Children. I wouldn't quite recommend it for that age group, but if you have an older group, I would definitely go with that -- it's amazing. But be prepared for difficult questions afterward.
And cjms... the minister here showed The Exorcist to the Youth Group when she led it -- so it would probably go over well! (Most of them, I think, laughed off all the scary stuff.)

MomsFruitCake, good taste! I would add:
Leprechauns (fun fairy tale, child appropriate)
Neverending Story (I still love it, and perfect message for 11-14 yr olds)
The Explorers (old one about a trio of boys who invent a bubble in which they can travel into space!!!)
Robin Hood (Errol Flynn, lots of Ho Ho! and good fun action, maybe a bit too old though)
Flubber (Robin Williams doing his funny mad scientist thing, some slapstick, a little romance and a flying car)
Star Trek IV: the Voyage Home (light, lots of funny bits, heck of an adventure)
Back to the Future (the king of time travel movies, I loved it at 12! Still love it!)

I just want to see a new generation enjoy a classic movie that is free of gratuitous violence, profanity and sex. A good movie doesn't need to be swimming in either.
