Well, a few weeks ago, I was feeling pretty indifferent about the Olympics, but now that they are here, I've got Olympic Fever.....big time! The whole city is buzzing. There's stuff happening on every street corner downtown. It is exciting!
I got to see the torch twice....once on Tuesday in Steveston Village and then as Rick Hansen wheeled it in and lit the cauldron in Richmond. Then again this morning downtown. I even saw Wayne Gretzky!
When I was downtown earlier this week, I shared a table in the food court with a Japanese snowboarder.
I am sooo excited for the opening ceremonies tonight.
Do you have Olympic fever??? What's your favourite part of the Olympics? Will you be watching it on TV?

Namaste,
I went to a local celebration. I enjoyed seeing the RCMP with their noble horses and their lances. Being handed out Canadian flags (and BC flags) and BC pins (oh, how I remember those pins in Europe). I finally got to understand what those Olympic mascots are all aboot.
I even got a chance to be shown on the side of a building in Robson Square. Who knows? :3
The day was FREEZING and, of course, I was in my every-season-but-winter-clothing, so I couldn't stay to see the torch.
But I got to enjoy seeing Canadians being patriotic and feeling good aboot themselves.
There was one guy who started talking to me aboot the Olympics and when the relay ritual started and if that was with Nazi Germany...I chuckled and shrugged and he said, "At least they're having a good time." :3
I'm amazed at all the traffic, both foot and air traffic. I wave at the helicopters when they fly over.
Again, I see all of this is an invitation to join in. Life as carnivale. Intentional living.
Wouldn't it be so nifty if we had First Contact with Aliens or Jesus right now...they'd be ignored by us, or asked to join in :3
Just a Self-writing poem,

Posted on: 02/12/2010 19:45
Yep Olympic fever around here. We walked over to Broadway Ave last evening to watch the torch relay. There was a large festive crowd. I also had to go downtown yesterday morning to pick up some event tickets I had ordered on line. Other than the one hour wait in the rain in line for the tickets, it was good to be a part of the celebration downtown. Namaste, I had lunch beside a couple of Russian athletes. And so many people from all over out and about everywhere.
And yet the shock and sadness of the Georgian luger who died earlier sobers the moment. We have been shedding tears in our home today watching about it, so tragic. I can't imagine how hard the opening ceremonies and games will be for his family, team mates and the whole community.
More as the games progress.

Please keep me updated I love hearing your stories! It's wierd being over here during all of this it seems as though the UK doesn't really even acknowledge the winter olympics.
The luge accident is so very sad and I feel for Nodar Kumaritashvili's family, friends, teammates and all luge athletes. Losing someone on that track and knowing you're going to have to go down it yourself must be nerve racking to say the least.

Posted on: 02/13/2010 01:51
Well, the opening ceremonies are over. I'll be interested in hearing from Namaste - I believe she was attending the event tonight. We watched on TV and at the end watched the fireworks from our window. The festivities are officially underway.
The forecast is for a lot of rain tonight and tomorrow morning in Vancouver. I hope it doesn't mess up the skiing too much. Not sure what's in store for Whistler, the snow is soft apparently. Delays in downhill are common anywhere in the world, but hopefully things won't be too messed up by the weather. The forecast after this weekend is good, although getting quite warm, which of course isn't good for Cypress Mountain.
Thinking about you over in England right now BethanyK and not being able to really experience what's going on back home.

Posted on: 02/13/2010 02:04
Not knowing anything about this team I must say it made me think of Eddie the Eagle at the Calgary Games and how everyone held their breath when he jumped. His skill level was far below the other athletes and there was a debate in the papers about whether he should be allowed to jump.
Others do say that this track is very fast....

No fever here. I do know people who are all excited about being part of the Olympics and Canada ( they have lots of bread and tickets for hockey and ice skating et al) but most of my heart-friends ( not all) are more pissed-off with a government for abdicating responsibility for kickstarting the infrustructure economy and instead has put us into debt with the vague hope that international corporatism will buy the Socredliberals more time in office to buy better jobs for themselves before the coroporate model stock market takes another dive because the economy becomes more imaginary and less involved in any real jobs or infrastructure after each party for the business elite that the planet throws.
And that's what this is. That is why Steve Harper's eyes are wet. He is in lust with the sound of the corporate jets and the magnitude of money entering Vancouver at this time. In fact, he has never been so akin to evil as now. And the athletes, they are the petty jesters performing as the financial moguls ( not downhillers) begin to haggle and fuss.
just a reality check. nothing more. oil, Calgary, Vancouver, oil, Real Estate, pollution, gangs, guns, illegal pot and a thriving black market . . . the frontier its all a mirage. I do love Catrina Lamay Doan though and Clara Hughes. Women who rock the world. But, I think that in general spectacle is pretty dull.

Wasn't he wonderful! His name is Shane Koyczan and the poem's title We Are More.
I wasn't going to watch the ceremonies. My partner demanded control of the clicker - and since he rarely ever does who was I to argue - he wanted to know who was going to light the flame. I was so very glad he did.
The welcome from the Four Host Nations and all the aboriginal dancers from across the country was fantastic.
And how could I not enjoy the cultural segment - quotes, fiddlers including Ashley MacIsaac, slam poetry and k. d. lang singing Leonard Cohen.
Kudos to whoever put that together it showed the world we are a grand diverse country and it made this little Canadian very proud.

What an orgy the opening
Posted on: 02/13/2010 10:59
What an orgy the opening ceremonies were. My wife and I watched from the local Cineplex.
B.C. is really courting the mighty lgbtq tourist dollar.
They opened the show with four giant erect crystalline penises emerging from the floor. Then native dancers came in, including one muscular warrior brave with no shirt on.
They also had a girl who surely looked like a lesbian leaping off the prairies and flying around in the sky.
Speaking of flying in the sky, just how many people did they have leave the floor and whoop around up there on wires?
Later in the ceremony a person who really looked transgendered came out and sang the anthem for the olympic flag.
Not to mention Nellie Furtado sexing up her song for titillation purposes.
All this was capped off of course by having transgendered lesbian singer k.d.lang sing.
Then four more giant penises were supposed to emerge out of the floor once again to be lit as the olympic torch but there was a problem with the hydrolics. One guy, so to speak, was too shy to show up for the party.
B.C. has shown itself to be the left coast once again.

just think of elizabeth manley finishing her long program at the '88 olympics in calgary. remember, this was 'heartbreak liz'... she had a reputation for blowing it big time in the long programs and dropping from the podium. but that night, she gave THE PERFORMANCE OF HER LIFE. and with every technical move she successfully completed, everyone in the building could barely breathe, they were just waiting for her to wipe out. but that night, she just had it. and when the final notes of the music played, and she put her head into her hands, and the crowd rose to its feet? THAT, frog, was HALLELUJAH.
not to mention that it is perhaps the most brilliant song ever written, and kd langs rendition of it anytime she performs it is simply a great moment in canadian music. period.

today, the mens downhill has been postponed due to fog created by the warm weather at whistler...
i'm sorry, but am i the only one who thinks that this whole soggy mess is more of a wake up call that global climate change is now a reality, rather than a celebration of athletic excellence??
normally, i love the winter olympics... i am a huge fan. the summer olympics bore me, and you never know who wins until the drug tests come in anyways. the winter olympics are just great. but not this year.
this year, all i can think of as i watch it is that this is my country, and my country has an environmental problem that needs to be addressed, and our PM doesn't feel that it is important at all.
for the first time ever, i can hardly wait until the winter olympics are over, and i can just not have this constant reminder of our climate woes staring me in the face.

The gender rucus flying over the wheat fields can be laid on the doorstep of the broadcaster.
W. O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind was about the story of a prairie boy's initiation into the mysteries of life, death, God, and the spirit that moves through everything: the wind.

Although one would have hoped that nobody cared what the individual looked like.

Yes, thank you sighs, I understand the 'hallelujah' part and why it would be chosen. I'm really talking about the rest of the lyrics which actually sound somewhat blasphemous to me, calling into question the existence of God. Why is it important to have that as a part of the opening ceremonies which have already championed other religions? It's really an insult to everyone in Canada and around the world who believes in the God of the Bible.

Yes, and let our thoughts and prayers be with the family of the Olympic luge competitor. The Georgian team did their country proud. Wearing the black armbands, marching into the stadium following their nation's flag, vowing to compete in memory of Kumaritashvili. I was also thankful for the gesture of the Vancouver games in giving a minute's silence and lowering the flag to half-mast.

'maybe theres a god above'... i dont' read that as questioning gods existence, frog... i see it as questioning the belief that god is a spirit in the sky kind of thing. for some people, god is the big guy in the clouds with a white beard. i think that is what it is questioning.

transcend with me here, frog... have you ever suffered a really bad breakup?? when someone walks all over you, and you feel that pain, then you know that love is not a victory march... at that point, love is like loosing a marathon, falling during a triple axel, wiping out at the finish line....
