I have been thinking of changing my online name for a while. I chose the name "specialmom" at a time in my life (about four years ago) when my entire being seemed to be enmeshed in the role of being a parent to a special needs child. Somehow I couldn't conceive of an indentity beyond that role.
Fast forward four years and while I am still the parent of a profoundly disabled child I no longer feel that is my exclusive identity. I have found that there is more to me than being a caregiver. It's a good place to be.
Today at the wondercafe picnic I talked about the fact that I wanted to change my name but wondered if that would be okay. I received a fair bit of support. Thanks guys!!!
So here I am. DaisyJane. I selected Daisy because they are my favourite flower. My bridal bouquet was daisies. Daisy by itself had already been taken by another poster so I also added Jane which is my middle name. Voila. DaisyJane.

I think it's a great change and I'm glad that your life is evolving from where it was four years ago. For what it's worth I have no problem at all with folks changing their usernames here if they do it with integrity like you are doing here and giving a head's up.
Thanks for that.
And thanks for not picking some weird unpronoucable symbol too

I suppose Matthew could be specialson, daisyson or I suppose I could just call him Matthew.

As I read this all I can think of is DaisyChain
There is a flower, a little flower
With silver crest and golden eye,
That welcomes every changing hour,
And weathers every sky

Welcome DaisyJane. I resonate with your reasons to change your username. At some times in our lives we are overwhelmed with certain things and at other times we allow ourselves to embrace other aspects of our being.
I think daisies are such beautiful flowers too.

So good to read this - life is so much better when we feel we're in a good place.
I thought about you after the picnic - you're a strong woman, physically and mentally - you have a lot to be proud of.

Posted on: 07/04/2010 23:04
I think this is good. And it gets me to thinking about names in general. Names we choose, names that are given to us, how we feel when people change their names, people's nicknames... Some people prefer to be called by their middle names...
In old chinese culture, and first nations culture, people would get a new name when they became grown up, hence Curly Hair became Crazy Horse.
I have always both liked and disliked my given name, and imagined other better names, or variants on my name. I am happy to have had the chance to give myself a name here on WC. And it has grown with me just like a real name. I identify myself as my name here, yet at the same time, it isn't real...
Stuff to ponder...
Love Daisyjane as a choice. : ) Daisy is my birthflower. It was on my baby names list~

Aw DaisyJane - it will take me awhile. I understand why you might feel the need for a change, but I've become used to you being Specialmom. I think that in part of my mind you will always be - specialmom - and a very special person. But DaisyJane you shall be, and I will learn to call you DaisyJane, and eventually think of you as DaisyJane. I will still remember how I met you and Matthew at the 2009 picnic, when you were Specialmom.
Daisies are one of my favourite flowers. I almost always have some wild daisies come up somewhere in my periniel patch each year - and I always let them grow and bloom.
Welcome DaisyJane.

You could drop him off with C~. She actually has lots of experience working with special needs kids. As for me, I'll take a short vacation.
