A week ago I drove along the expressway and noted that the Oktoberfest tent is being constructed. In KW Oktoberfest is a big deal. The tent is a sure sign that summer is waning and fall is on our doorstep.
A few days ago we returned from our annual, five family camping extravaganza at Killbear Provincial Park. This always happens at the tail end of August (no mosquitoes!). When we return our kids know that their summer holiday days are numbered to the fingers on one hand. Another sign that summer is fading.
In our neighbourhood it is quite common for kids to be away for significant chunks of the summer. Some go to sleepaway camp for a month, followed by summer holidays with family. Some spend the summer at a family cottage. A few kids spend the summer with extended family in various European locations (i.e. grandma in Portugal, auntie in Croatia). In the last few days all of the kids are appearing on the neighourhood streets again where they are all comparing notes on their summer holidays.
In the rhythm that is our life these are the little things that, for me, signal the end of summer holidays and the arrival of fall and back-to-school.

The Ex starting. I waited all summer for it when I was a kid but then it was sad because you knew it meant school in a week or so.
I picked my tomatoes, always means end of summer to me.
The grass is dewy in the morning after the cold nights.
A few red leaves in trees as you drive around.
All the back to school supplies in stores and commercials on TV. Though i hate the one that uses the theme of The most wonderful time of the year.
I always loved having my kids home for summer, it was the best time of the year.

Well I'm living in a heat wave right now so that's not showing it fading.
Last week while lying in bed I heard a flock of geese flying over. This is happening most mornings now. When the geese start flying summer is coming to an end. :(

We're in the middle of our hottest week of the summer. It's hard to believe that it's almost over. The kids are going to fry in school on Thursday.
One sign that summer is coming to an end: we're all checking in at the hurricane centre website several times a day to see if Earl is going to hit us.

It's pouring rain in Vancouver today - feels like Nov not the end of August. It is supposed to clear by tomorrow so maybe it will again feel more like the end of summer. The earlier sunsets are what really hit me this past week letting me know the summer was coming to a close.

There's a shocker.
Meanwhile, here in Canada's world class city, a heat wave is going on. Sure doesn't feel like summer is ending.

Signs that summer is fading for me is only having, maybe, 35 days left of fishing from my boat on my favourite lake. What can I say...I'm a fisherman. Then I have to wait till the northern lakes freeze so I can go ice fishing!!!

I thought we'd had our first frost of the season here last night. I think we narrowly missed it this time. It will be here soon.
I went to Staples today to check out all in one fax/printers.......the place was full of back to school shoppers. If I have to buy one right now, I am hoping to get a deal even if I am not going back to school. Think I'll get away with it?
I think I wore my shorts on my morning dog walk for the last time on about Friday. Brrrrr.
The days are getting noticeably shorter. Oh well, in this world class city it is still light out at 8:00 pm right now.

Signs of Fall:
The weather! Today I wore a cardigan over a long sleeved shirt and sipped hot chocolate (with marshmallows of course!). We had a BBQ at a coworkers house tonight and spent the entire time inside.
The change in my schedule - next week when the kids go back to school my work hours return to something resembling normal (during the summer I spend 52.5 hours a week at my two jobs, during the rest of the year it's around 40).
The Saanich Fair happens this weekend (think PNE/CNE but on a MUCH smaller scale and with no musicians).

Hi Hilary.
No, actually it is about not going back to school. Groups of retired teachers in my area (don't know that it happens across ON and elsewhere) get together for breakfast on the first day of school and celebrate the fact that we don't have to go to work - no more bells to dictate our lives!

Yeah. Except many of those "retired" teachers end up being on the supply list and keep me out of a job.

That will be great! I hope they are still doing it in 20-25 years when I retire from teaching (although I'd like to suggest lunch instead...why get up early for breakfast if I'm retired?)

Other signs:

Ahhhh, no worries gecko. I have a job interview on the 14th with Mad Science. It is an organization that does science programs in schools to get kids pumped about science. I figure in the meantime I can still crank out the resumes to the local school boards. If nothing happens in this school year, I will start looking more into northern part of Ontario. My wife gave me the go ahead.
