This is for MrsAnteater, Katachen, Somegirl, Graeme, Mike Patterson - and anyone else in Nova Scotia, Southeastern NB, and PEI who are experiencing a hurrican today. Has it hit your area yet? Are you okay? My prayers are with you as I hope that you are able to 'ride it out' without personal injury or too much damage.
Here in Fredericton, we are out of the main path. At 11:00 am it is overcast, sometimes deadly still, and then with gusts that rustle the leaves and send cool (if humid) air in the windows (a welcome relief after a long heat wave). There has been a bit of rain - hardly enough to dampen the earth beneath my big maple tree. But you can feel it in the atmosphere - there is weather somewhere near. The tops of the tallest trees are swaying, even when it is still down below. The air feels heavy.
In Fredericton area I am safe. I presume all is well with you, Waterbouy. Puppypaws, I believe that you live north-west of here - further out of the direct path of Hurrican Earl. Unless things change in the next few hours we should be fine - maybe the lights will blink - maybe the TV reception won't be so good - maybe we'll lose power.
For you further south and east - good luck. My thoughts are with you. Let us know how you make out.

At 1:45 pm in Fredericton we are having rain (not heavy rain but what started as a few drops and heavy humidity at 7:00 am is now a steady ground wetting downpour. Also the occasional breeze could now be called a gusty wind - but I wouldn't call it a storm. How are folks further south and east?

Same in Moncton. I think Halifax is getting this one. The breeze has been just enough to knock down one, dead twig.. But I hear many thousands in the Halifax area have no electricity.

Well actually Seeler I just moved to PEI yesterday night. It just started clearing off now. We had a lot of heavy wind and rain there for a few hours. Hydro flickered on and off but never went off completely. The student parking lot here is flooding but other then that everything seems to be okay. Except the stuff at the construction site next door it's a bit scattered.

some hurricane. I could have spent the day at the beach. I doubt whether the rainfall has amounted to 5 cm; and the winds have been just decent for sailing.
Nor so in Halifax, though.

Oh and I used to live to the South East of Fredericton. But from what my mom was saying earlier today there's not a whole lot going on there at all.

Sorry Puppypaws, I had forgotten that you were away continuing your studies in PEI. Glad the storm didn't do you much harm there, and that Moncton also was spared.
Any word yet on the folks in NS?
Just a short while after I got off the Cafe here around 2:00 Mr. Seeler phoned to report that there had been a few powerful gusts of wind and 5 minutes of heavy rain downtown and that the power was off in part of the city. I hadn't noticed if the wind and rain increased here. And looking out the window at 3:30 I noticed sunshine and blue skies. I guess the storm passed us by.
The air is clearing, the temperature is at 23 degrees - such a relief after 35 or so for five days strait.

Thinking about those affected by Earl. I'll be interested in hearing from the NS folks - some may well be without power.

Not a problem Seeler :)
And I have a few friends in NS there saying power is out most places there.

Some acquaintances flew to Halifax on Thursday for a wedding scheduled for today (Saturday). I'm feeling for that poor wedding party ... hip waders? Buckets of hair spray?

I don't know what Halifax looks like but out here it was just a rainy windy day. Local Festival got canceled. Lots of time to clean the house. Most people outside of Halifax/Lunenburg should have power. We didn't even get a flicker.

One man was killed, I think in the Halifax area. He fell from a boat. He was wearing a life jackets, but high winds and strong currents made it impossible for him to get to shore.

Posted on: 09/04/2010 21:45
Just got my power back. It went out about 10-20 minutes before the storm started to let up. We almost made it. It wouldn't have been so bad except they have an alarm right outside my door that goes off when the power goes out and they didn't come and turn it off.
My husband woke me up early in case we had to get the air conditers out of the windows. The morning was spent watching the wind build up and listening to the radio. There were whitecaps on the lake infront of our home and the trees were blowing like crazy. The power went out. The alarm started. My husband and I went for a walk. It was still really windy and there were some branches blowing around. My son and I played some games. My in-laws still had power and the alarm was driving us bonkers so we went out there. They live in Eastern Passage right by the sea so we went down and watched the waves, totally amazing, and visited for a bit. We bought take out. The alarm was still going off. Finally someone came and shut it off. We sat in the candlelight and chitter chatted. The power came back on about an hour ago and the alarm started again, but someone came and turned it off pretty quickly this time. Ane here I am.
It wasn't nearly as bad as Juan, but Juan was at night so we didn't get to see it. This was actually the first time that our power has gone off since Juan. There are a lot of branches, leaves and stuff around. You could see where the surf came up over the road in one place in the Passage.

Yes, appreciated your post somegirl .... glad you are all well there and were able to find a place to go away from the annoying alarm. It sounds as though you got right up close and personal with this storm.

Quite an experience Somegirl. I'm sure that alarm would have driven me bonkers = maybe it should have an automatic shut-off after a minute or two. It's good that you were able to escape for a time.
Mr. Seeler would have loved to go for a walk with you, and experience a hurricane (from a close but safe position). I too would have joined you. We haven't even had a good thunder strom this summer. Just deadly heat and humidity in July and again last week.

I recently got home from church. The air is cool, clear, crisp. There is a nice breeze, and yes, a few fallen leaves. The sky is blue with fluffy white clouds scurrying across. Absolutely gorgeous!!! I've been waiting for days like this all through the long hot summer. Fall is my kind of weather. Regardless of what the calendar says, it seems to have started today. I hope there is no going back.

Oops, sorry just getting to this. I was in the valley during the storm and yes, lost power off and on. When I did get back to Halifax, things were a bit of a mess and the power had been off for 1-1/2 days --stinky fridge, but that's about it. It could have been much worse. Thanks for the post, Seeler, and your thoughts.
The monkies, the fools, went down to historic properties and got drenched. Silly monkies.
