About Me:

That's me in the picture. I say that because it's a mirror to me. The first time I looked at it, I saw myself. It was a revelation...of myself, but something more than what I normally think is me. It was, and is, ephemeral, poetic, pathetic, haunting. It reminds me that we pass this way for a time only, shadows in the mist, bursting with meaning and impulse, but prone to getting shot down by reckless teenagers too. I saw that I am a being of light and of earth, someone trying to understand the gravity and reality (if there is one) of "my eternal soul". Anyway......it's fun and gratifying to write the truth here, isn't it. Because in the real world we have to live with each other - try to get along when we can't even relate. And the real world, the world from inside our cloaks of earth, seems, somehow, too challenging and less controllable than the one we navigate with wings of heart and mind. But, I try to remember that I am not the creator of either world, and try to see past the challenge of living day to day, to the opportunity that may be there to find meaning and make a positive difference. And BTW, my name is Rob Vanderkam and I am a geographer by trade. I study the occurrence of patterns over space and time. Then I make maps and manage information for my employer.
